MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Council was held at the Council Chambers on Wednesday afternoon last. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Inder, Wilson, " Hjorring, and Brookes. BAILWAY FBOII PALMEBBTON TO CLYDE.

His Wobship stated that lie had called the meeting to consider the advisability of taking steps to urge upon the Provincial .Council the necessity of immediate survey of- a line of railway from Palmerston to r Clyde. He said there can.be no doubt that if lands are reserved say as security for a Harbor Trust, University, or other purposes, there will be no .fund raisable for the opening up the north interior of Otago. The southern people watch this point most carefully, and throw-the burden of securing their works on those districts that are asleep. After considerable discussion the following resolutions were passed and carried : —"That, considering the rapidity with which the unalienated lands of the Crown are being used as securities for outside purposes it is very desirable that a line of railway should be * laid off for ultimate construction; and lands in the vicinity of such railway be set apart as the security that will be needed for such construction." " That a Committee be formed, consisting of His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Craig, Wilson, Brookes, to draw up a memorial to be laid before the Provincial Council to urge upon the Government the immediate survey of a line of railway from Palmerston * to Clyde. ■
