SPORTING.

CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB AUTUMN I ■ MEETING.— EIRST DAY.

The first day's racing went off very successfully, with fine weather, and a,fair attendance, seconding the efforts-»pf the dub in the cause of sport, and in their in-' itiationof an autumn meeting. ■ -The'fields were, as a rule, exceedingly' but the racing was for the most part quite up to the usual mark. The Trial Stakes wits a moral for Lurline. who won as she pleased; Malice, however, running very unkindly. For the Leger, four horses faced the starter, Papapa and Castanet being scratched; Castaway was greatly' fancied, but ricked himself during the race, leaving Templeton and Eakapo to .decide lhe issue. The former was admi rably ridden by Ray, and ran a far better horse than was expected—so much so. that his chances in the Autumn' Handicap look rather rosy. Defamer, who was dead amiss, was never in it irunv the start Tn the Champaign Rralrps the pot boiled over, the knowing ones almost to a man standing on the timmeline colt. The Waimea filly would have had more support but for the fact thatshe was any-

thing but fit. She however won the race [ very easily, Remnant, quite an outsider, coming in second, the favorite third The .Easter Handicap was a gift' to Calumny, Parawhenua being scratched. The following are the events- in detail:— -
