We feraid that, owing to the Upper Kyeburn . Cumniittee not having superintended the work at Mrs. George's kill—not even peggmg it out, the "wtsTk had bten entirely slcared by the contractors. The specifications were not, however; complied with—it being imperative that the gradieni; .of the hill should be uniform. Tfes stony pinch cutting, although better adapted for traffic, was not done according to specification. The remainder of the work was fairly passable. Taking these facts into consideratio."., we were not prepared to pass these contracts {in the hands of William Hackney), as a great deal of heavy work would be required at the hill leading to Mrs. George's. We accordingly proceeded to mark off the ground as it would be necessary to make it to render traffic safe, and gave the contractors the offer to do the work, leas a deduction of £ll for the faulty work of the other contract. This arrangement was submitted to and approved of by his Worship the Mayor and Cr. Inder, and the Town Clerk was instructed to furnish the additional specification for signature. We gave the contractors to understand that we would be prepared to recommend the Council to pass a voucher for £4O on tLe work done, which we hope the Council will approve of. Mr. Morgan's contracts were not in a sufficiently finished state to justify their, being passed. We instructed him to proceed with more expedition with the hill at Mr. Cain's fence, which was agreed upon by both parvlwrkj OtVulOAUlUtOi.^ 1 . The whole work should be completed in a fortnight. C.
