SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

CROMWELL BACKS; First day's races:—Maiden Plate: Manx "Boy, 1; started favorite.—Grand Stand Handicap, mile: Betting: Atlas level, Tambourini, 2 to 1 against, Malabar, 3to 2. .Result: Atlas, 1; Taffrail a good second, and Malabar a good third. Tambourini was last from the start, and pulled up half-a-mile from home., For the first half-mile the race was. very hot. Before the race Taffrail" bolted, and. galloped three miles.—Flying Handicap, 1 mile: Brunette was a strong favorite, and came in first. Manx Boy was the only other starter.

Th? rain came on heavy the morning of the second day's races, lasting till 11 o'clock, when it cleared off. Atlas, trod on some glass after the race on th'« first dav, and could not, run on the second. There were three acceptances for the second day's Handicap: Tambourini, 9st. 121b.; Brunette, 7st. 41b.; Taffrail, 7st. 71b. The following is the second day's racing:-—Derby: Th'« Maid, I.—.Tockey Club Handicap, ,£100; 2 miles; Brunette, 1; Fambourini and Taffrail two lengths behind. This was a splendid race. —-Stewards' Purse, mile and a half: Manx Boy, 1, beating Malabar (carrying 211b more) and others. —Consolation: Fenian, 1, beating Malabar and Taffrail.

THE AUCKLAND RACES, t December 28. The Turf Club's races commenced to day. Beautiful weather and a good, attendance were the features. ICakapo bfeing an absentee destroyed m'ich. interest. The Trial Stakes from the start .was a gift to Batter, the rest lacking quality and condition. The next, event, the Hai-lwayj Elate, vras a walk over for Calumny; The Turf Club's Cup was a good race. Parawhenua, a raking colt, tied Bedwood's Papapa, making the running for Yatterina, who ran" very well, and but for being ridden by a strange, jockey, would have made it a closer race. Hatred was short of work, and Black Eagle quite outpaced. The rest of the events do not require comment. The course is very hard, but the Club has erected a mignifieent stand. ... Mr. "Redwood ha 9 bought liis team' back from Mr. Perkins, bnt it is doubtful whether Kakapo will be allowed to start for the second raoet'ng. I cannot send the probable winners for tomorrow, as the handicaps are not yet out. The following is the detailed account of the races :

The two ran together for about three quarters of a mile, when the .favorite dropped back beaten, and ißunderra cantered in a winner by a couple of lengths.

The attendance on the second day wag far inferior to the first. Th-re was beautiful weather but the racing, with the exception of that for the New Zealand Cup, was very indifferent. The first event, the "Innkeepers' Parsa, brought two acceptors to the post—Hatred, Bst 121b.; and Slander, i Bst. The former made the running from the jump, and won easily. Time, 2 min. 50j sec. Slander was short of work. For the Flying Stakes, Hatred walked over. Ben Nevis, by Diomedes, belonging to Walters, was greatly fancied, but did not start. For the New Zealand Cup three faced the starter Yatterina, 7st. 11 lb.; Calumny, 9st.; and Atlanta, 6<t. slb. Calumny was a trifle most fancied. This was a grand race; Yatterina got away first, and led for one mile and ahalf. Calumny then went up. Atlanta was outpaced, and a-neck-and-neck* race home ensued, resulting in favor of Yatterina by a head. Itay rode Calumny magnificently. In the general opinion it was Calumny's race, or a dead heat. Time 3 min. 49 sec. The Consolation Stakes were won by Parawhenua, carrying Bst. 121b.. beating Black Eagle, carrying 7st. 10lb", | easily. Papapa,, having, gone wrong, was an absentee, for the Cup. Hatred,; after a walk-over .for., the Flying Stakeß, was hissed by the public.
