Mr. O'Rorke was elected Speaker. , CROMWELL. The Cromwell Company's crushing yielded 446 ounces of gold from eighty-six tons of stone. CHBISTCHUBCH. December 16. The Governor laid the foundation stone of the Normal School. He warmly eulogised the conduct of the Provincial Government in making such a large provision for education.' He afterwards attended the luncheon at the Superintendent's residence. 10,000 people were present at the sports. QTTEENSTOWN. Messrs. Turnbull and Bastings' interviews were thoroughly satisfactory. The Wakatip run question and the Commonage Reserves were readjusted, existing rights being reserved. - The feeling against the sale has toned down. WELLINGTON. Many of the natives in town say that a fight will take place at Horowhenna, notwithstanding the arrangements of the Government. Major Wills failed with the Muapoko as with the Ngatiraukawa. Puke guards the Horowhenua stream, and is determined to shoot the first Muapoko who crosses. Several have .already been sent back. Otaki is full of Ngatiraukawas, ready for any emergency. ' , _ ■ • December 6, General Wolsely describes the Ashantees as utterly demoralised after their late defeats. • The Pope has issued encyclical censures of the German and Swiss Governments. The reported duel between two German Generals has.been contradicted. The Captain-General of Cuba telegraphed to the Government of Madrid that it was impossible to immediately surrender the survivors of the Virginia's expedition. The Captain-General has since resigned. President Grant's message to the Congress was friendly. He denounces the misrule and excesses of the Cubans, with whom it was dangerous to continue relations. On the Virginia question he demands a satisfactory and honorable adjustment. # America is resolved to extend the utmost indulgence to Spain with respect to the Cuban affair, but the matter of the Virginia's expedition has been referred to Congress to decide on its ultimate action. ■'- .
December 4. At the wool sales prices remain without any-noticeable alteration. Australian sorts are Id. lower, secondhand sorts prejudicing the market. The Liverpool sales were languid.
December 6. -Here has been 'a fall of 2d. on inferior parcels of -wool; but a brisk competition was ; maintained yesterday. 43,400 bales were gold.
The sales close on the 12th instant. The February sales are to commence on the 12th of that month. Bank reserve favorable. Colonial securities firm. LATEST.
A telegram from the Agent-General announces the following vessels as having sailed for New Zealand during November;— Ocean Mail, for Wellington, 320 souls; Queen Age, for Auckland, 190; Imera, for Napier, 270; Carnatic, for Port Chalmers, 260; and Dillaree, for Canterbury. The Agent-General also announces eight vessels, with 1,800 adults, that will sail for the Colony during December, one of which will proceed to the Bluff. * In January, a vessel will be despatched from Belfast and one from Queenstown.
_ London, Dee. 9. The Emperor of Austria has created Tallerman a Knight of the Grand Cross, for his services in introducing Australian meats. General Wolsely is ill on the Gold Coast. A Conservative has been elected for Exeter in the room of Coleridge. Bazaine has been adjudged guilty of the charges against him, and sentenced to military degradation and death. The American feeling with respect to Cuban affairs is calmer.
The Congress is supporting the Cabinet in its refusal to recognise the belligerency of the Cubans.
The conduct of Sickles, the American minister in Madrid, has been disapproved of. He has tendered his resignation, which Grant refuged to accept. The Spanish authorities have decided to surrender the Virginia and the survivors on the 18th, DUNEDIN. The Caller Ou, from London, arrived this morning. In the Gazette to-day the following lands are thrown open for sale on 'deferred payments :—6OOO acDes, Waipahee; 2635 acres, Glenkenich; 5000 acres, Waikaka; 1500 acres, Lower Hawea; 2500 acres, Highlay. Macraes j 2582 acres, Teviot. The New Zealand Insurance Company have declared a dividend of five-per cent for the half year. LOtTDON. Bazaine was to mercy. The Lauderdale, for Auckland, was off Deal with emigrants on October 21st, repairing damages after collision. The emigrants are unharmed. Harrison attributes the failure of the frozen meat experiment to the hurried way in which the preparations wpre made. Snlisburg sailed with emigrants under Colonists Aid Corporation (or JS'ew Zealand. ' The Austrian Emperor visits St. Petersburgh in January. \ General Grant declares that the recent money panic is the first step towards specie payments. Mr. ex-Secretary Bentwill believes that the Government will shortly resume specie payDr. Beggren, Swedish botanist, left on a scientific tour for New Zealand. Featherston has been on an emigration tour to Scotl«nd. 2000 Germans and Scandinavians leave for New Zealand next month, after which German emmigratioii 'ceas.es.
