ST. ANDREW'S DAY IN DUNEDIN.

The following is an account of the day's j racing taken from the Otagb ' Guardian' • . Handicap Hurdle Race, of 30"soys., en-trance-2 sovs.. One mile and a half, over seven flights of hurdles, 3 ft. 6 in. high. • Mr. J. Ward's oh g Sir Tatton, aged 12st. , 41b ... ... .. (D. O'Brien) : 1 , Mr. H. Goiirlay's ch g Kildare, aged, 9st 41b ~ (T. M'Kay) 2 ' Mr. R. "Fraser's b m Medora, aged, list 91b ... ... . . (W. M'Kay) 3 Mr. G. Dodson's ch m Sweetlins, aged, Bst 121b ... ... ... (A. M'Kay) 0 Mr. A. E. Bridget's g g Grey Doctor, 6 yrs, Bst 101b ... (W. Prossan) 0 Sweetlips started with 141b. overweight; Kiidare with 151b. and Grey Doctor with 14£lb. ' Betting: Even money on Sir Tatton and Medora; 5 to 1 against any other.

Originally there were six horses nailed ■ to compete for this event, but Mr. IIScott's br. g Harkaway, the sixth horse 1 on the card, met with an accident about a ; vweek ago, . and his owner did not think :Kim "fit to bring to the front.\ Medora and , ;§ir';Tattpn were much admired when ,they in., thie paddock. If Medora looked a little too heavy, but tfii,s> circumstance did not appear .to discaurage> her backers;-., .Sir Tatton never ~ better; and there were not a feW"who■ hazarded the opinion that ..he- would-sail away from " every thing", when he got. the . chance., ,What also a few spoke of as markable was the fact that each of the three M'Kay Brothers mounted a competitor in the race. / The flag dropped to a pretty good start, Sir Tatton and Medora getting away on pretty equal terms. On attempting to clear the first row of " sticks" Sweetlips succumbed, and Medora followed suit at the next flight of hurdles. Kildare also threw his rider opposite the stand, butT. M'Kayquicklyremounted, and went-away at a rattling pace after those

who had left him considerably in the rear. Sir Tatton cleared every obstacle in splendid'style, and soon gave everybody reason to pronounce him the premier of the hour. Opposite the stand he was leading the others by many . lengths, although apparently never once pressed On coming into the straight for, the run home, Kildare - «Rceivecl" a"few sma?t~reminders - '"from" M 'Kay's whip, but without avail. The Grey Doctor's position in the race was not at any time calculated to raise the expectations of his friends, and the same remarks apply with equal force to Sweetlips. Sir Tatton. won, hands down, by a length, Kildare being second, and Medora a bad third. Time, 3min 25sec. MaidenJElate, of 20 sovs., entrance, 1 sov. One mile - ana-a~;cjuafEer.
