HOT WORDS IN COURT.
During the case of White v. W. Calder, being cross-examined by Mr. Barton in a portion of his evidence, said : On my oath, I did not help the Waste Lands Commission to keep documents, from you the other day.- I don't know what influence was brought to bear to keep the documents from you. I thoughtit right to keep the Whites in the dark about having certain documents in our possession. I do think that is honest; I think it is commercial morality. Ido pay my bills. I would not put my hand into a man's pocket and steal his pockethanderchief or watch. Smith:- I must appeal to the Court not to allow this witness to be insulted in,this way. - Mr. Barton: I cannot insult the witness. Mr. Smith: I remember, iri. a certain case, Mr. Justice,. Richmond .stopping, counsel from insulting witnesses in this manner. . t Mr. Barton.: I don't care for Mr. Justice Richmond; and, if he did .so,.the has; no right to occupy-the seat upon the bench which : he holds. His Honor: Ido not see that I can stop Mr.- Barton in his line of cross-ex-amination. .
