An influential deputation to the New South. Wales G-overnment urged the annexation of Fiji. The Governor telegraphed to England explaining the position, and recommending annexation. The Wellington Provincial Council will meet for the despatch of business on November 5, to render possible the legal expenditure of the £175,000 now available. The news from the new diggings in Queensland is discouraging. The tale of a marvellous escape from death comes from Beechworth. A girl named Millie Cogan, aged ten years, who was assisting her younger sisters across a sluice-box at the Wood's Havine mine, fell over, and was . swept away as if a feather, there being at least 500 inches of water then running in the boxes. After being carried a distance of 900 ft., she was washed over a " dump" lift, high, falling into another sluice-box 700 ft. long. Passing through the latter, she was swept over another " dump " 20ft. high, falling among rough jagged rocks. Here she managed to crawl out a few feet from under the heavy body of falling water, and was shortly after rescued by Mr. Bartlett, foreman oi the mine.
