"THE OTHER SIDE."
There is no member of the present Ministry who has been more persistently abused than Mr. Bathgate, the Minister of Justice: but, if we may judge of his abilities by the new Districb Courts Act, •there is none on whom calumny has been i lavished with less reason. No doubt the pre-eminent genius of Mr. Vogel tends to dwarf his colleagues; saving, perhaps, Mr. M'Lean, the Great Mogul of the Maoris. But Mr. Bathgate has" now fairly won his spurs ; and, if he continue in his present course, may hereafter take high rank as a law reformer, and render far greater services to the Colony than many • more pretentious debaters, whose sensational careers may generally be summed up in four words, vox et prceierea nihil. — ' Timaru Herald.'
