MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Municipal Council was held at the Water Works Office on Wednesday evening last. Present: His Worship the Mayor, and Crs.' Craig, de Lautour, Hjorring, Inder, and Wilson. CORRESPONDENCE. The (Jlerk read copy of letter to his Honor the Superintendent, requesting that the Mu- ' nicipality should be gazetted as working under certain parts of the Municipal Corporations Act of 1867. A letter was also read from the Athenaeum Committee, presenting a parcel of Parliamentary Papers to the Council. Ordered to be acknowledged with thanks. RATE. .-■■•; The Finance Committee reported that they thought, considering there had been no rate yet levied, it would be desirable to levy Is. in the £1 up to July 31, 1874. It was proposed that a 9d. rate be agreed upon. An amendment was put and lost, "That the Committee's report be adopted. A further amendment was also lost—"That the rate be GcUWafter which the original proposition was carried. REMOVAL OF BUILDINGS ON STREETS. Cr. de Lautour moved the motion of which he had given notice, slightly amended —"That any person or company who shall have built or enclosed any ground upon the streets in the Borough of ISTaseby shall be liable, at any time within three months after the passing of this motion—at a month's notice duly served upon the occupier or resident to remove the same." A petition was read from Mr. John Cogan and others, alleging that such removal was unnecessary, and praying the Council to defer action. Considerable discussion took place upon this motion. Upon it being pointed out by the mover that this motion merely asserted a liability, and did not order an indiscriminate and sudden removal of everybody who might have chanced to encroach his property a foot or so onastreet —it giving any one four months notice, which in itself was a concession, as such encroaching buildings could be at once summarily removed. The motion was passed. OBSTRUCTION TO PATHS. Cr. de Lautour moved—"That all persons whose verandahs or lamp-posts obstructed the foot-paths in the Borough of Naseby, should be required to remove the same within two months, unless, by special permission of the Council. (Carried). The Town Clei'k was instructed to write" to Webber and party, requesting them to keep a

light burning on their dangei'ous tail race, near the Mn sonic Hall, at night. A.lso to M'lntosh and others, in reference to bad state of the road to the Pi-esbyterian Church. Acaorxis. Accounts to the amount of £2S were passed, and ohe Council then adjourned.
