CORRESPONDENCE.

We do not hold ourselves hi any way respond sible for the views and sentiments ex-" presswd by correspondents. MUNICIPAL WOBKS. (To the Editor of the Mount Ida Cheonicle.) : Sin,—The action of the late and ; pre-- 1 sent Municipal Councils with-regard, to the Town Hall site ■ purchase; has "given rise to the assertion that being under Municipal law is decidedly a' bad thing; Without expressing" any opinion' as tt> that action, I think it is time the Council should refute th"e~assertion. . : A inost needful work, and one which I think.was proposed (but lost) by a representative of the.South Ward in. the. last Council, is the formation of the road be--tween Eoss' garden and Bremner's • tail race. It is traversed greatly by carters who do not wish to pass througkthe town, and is in a most deplorable state. J -donot know of any road within the bounds of the Municipality, with the exception of one, which is so nearly impassable. The formation of this road' would cost a very , trifling sum, and would be a really necessary work performed. Only a few days ago I happened to notice two waggons i passing up it, and in order to ' keep the horses on their feet, it was necessary , to flog them all the way up. Something j too ought to be done to. both the road and ! foot, path from the corner of the Victoria Hotel to the Ballarat. Two or three men with horses and drays would, with such j excellent gravel handy, in a very short ! time put the road in/ a sbmewhat credit- ' able state. v I | It seems to me that it "would have been ' more judicious to have expended the i money in such necessary works, than in forming those roads" up by the Catholic church, and in front of ex-Cr. Brown's garden. The sti-eet at the back,of.the I' Chronicle ' office has been repaired—that certainly was not unrequired. | Drainage in front of Law's blacksmith ! shop is very much needed. In fact the•town is very insufficiently drained, all i round, and now that sickness is.so prevalent—about half the population being ( partially laid up—the want will be more j keenly felt.—l am, &c, j Sand and G-jsavel. : [The reason the Council delayed to im- | prove the roads referred to by our corres- ; pondent was, we believe, that negotiations. ' were pending to fix the liability for forma- • tion on the Government of all such roads, as might be deemed to be main roads;. i'-This negotiation is ended so-far- that there j is-no obstacle-to- the immediate improveI ment of any roads within the Borough, as

the Government have admitted the-liabi-lity. We. believe the short delay: complained, of will result in a considerable sum being placed to the credit,, of 'the Corporation. The road to the Catholic church was a very necessary one, and Was cheaply and well constructed. —• E». M.I.C:] . ■.■'-..-.
