In reference to-the sale of land at; the Maerewhenua, his Honor the Superintendent forwarded the following telegram in reply to the protest .of the President of the Otago Miners' Association :—" It does not appear that any auriferous land has been :;old at Maerewhenua. I sect Impost whole history; of the transaction: In%iiny case the Executive Government" arepowerless in the matter, as the- Colonial Legislature, much against ni y will, has in-ite wisdom .vested.the administration in an irresponsible Board, over which Government can exercise no con-, trol. In respect of the sale in question, it will be seen fhat both Government and Board have taken every precaution to exclude auriferous ground, and that coinpletionof the purchase could and would have been compelled by the Supreme Court, at no end of legal costs against the Province. —J. Mi-CANDitSW."
