THE MINERS' ASSOCIATION.

A special meeting of tlie Committee of the Miners' Association was held' on Monday evening last in the Temperance Hal], for the purpose of electing Chairman instead of Mr Robt. lloss, who has left the Colony. All the members were present. • Movedby Mr Jackson, seconded by Mr Kealy, and carried unanimously—- " That Mr 11. B. M'lntosh be the permanent Cliairman of the Committee of the Mount Ida Miners Association." Mr Thos. Meager was also elected a member of the Comifiitfcee. A long letter was received and read from Mr de Lautour, M.P.C., stating amongst other things that he had had an interview with the Minister of Justice, who is to have charge of the new Gold'fiekls Bill through the Assembly. - The Minister of Justice explained himself as being most anxious to obtain practical' criticism on the Bill, as he said the Assembly would certainly pass any measure brought up for the, assumed good of the Goldfields. Mr de Lautour also said that it would be very desirable for the Committee to discuss the Bill clause by clause, \ as the Central Committee was now doing, for what might suit the Arrow district' might, not suit Mount Ida. In conclusion he said at all times:; he should be pleased.to be of service to the Association. . The report of Mr ELeene, C.E., Eyeburn, was next read upon the state and condition of the boring-rods, which have been handed over by the Corporation for the use of the Association. The' report stated that the boring apparatus, taken on the whole, can be easily put in good repair. There are, however, several adjuncts which are indispensable— namely, a stout triangle or compass, to raise and lower the rods. About 80 feet more rods will be required, also two blocks or pulleys. • ... - . , The Secretary was requested to forward the report to the G-oldfields Secretary, with a request that tho G-overnment would b.e good enough to supply, as early as possible, all the parts required' to put the apparatus in complete working order. A long discussion took place respecting tlio .early closing of the banks on Saturdays, when it was resolved that a deputation consisting; of - Messrs Jackson, Hewitt, and Kealy should wait upon;the agents, with a view of inducing, them to alter the time now fixed. ' The sale of land' advertised in the. ' Chronicle ' last week engaged the attention of the Committee for some time. The Chairman was requested to see Mr' Surveyor Barron, and ascertain the situation, of the land ; and, if deemed necessary, to oppose the same in the name of the Association. The Chairman ascertained the next, day from the Surveyor that sections 118, 120, 121, and 134, Block I, are in close proii-

mity to the course of tlie intended Sludge Channel. In consequence of which, he addressed a letter to the Waste Lands Board, pointing out the fact, and requesting the sections above-mentioned to be withheld from sale. "We are requested: to. state that the next meeting will be held on Wednesday, the 30 th inst.
