THE STRIKE ON THE SLUDGE CHANNEL.

(To the "Editor of the Mount Ida Chbonicle.) Sib,—ln your issue of the 18th, you or some other person has been good enough to state that one or two ne'er-do-wells caused a strike on the sludge channel; allow me to state that that is an untruth. I was on the ground when it was proposed, seconded, and carried—and one man was not the instigator, nor two, nor ten. Tbey all unanimously agreed, with the , exception of a Chinaman and two or three others, who I believe were his mates, though of a different color. Now, I will give the true reason why my mate and I struck. We did .not believe in the truck system. 1 understand the Home Government do not allow it, and I did not think the Otago-G-evernment would allow contractors to use that method of paying men.—l am, &c., ; A Sufferer. . Maerewhenua, April 26th, 1873. "
