MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Victoria Hall on Tuesday afternoon last. Present: —His "Worship the Mayor (E. T. George, Esq.) presiding, and Crs. Busch, Brookes, Brown. Hore, and "Wilson.. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. ~ VALUATORS. A letter from Mr. J. Gason, accepting the office of Valuator, was read. The Committee appointed at last meeting to negotiate with two gentlemen for the offices of Valuators recommended Messrs, and Gason as competent persons, which was confirmed on the motion of Cr. Busch, seconded by Cr. Brookes.

COUNCIL CHAMBERS. In the matter of the Council Chambers, the Committee asked the permission of the Council for further time to mature their plans, previous to making their report. The request was granted. INSPECTOR OP mriSANCES. Cr. Busch proposed, Cr. Brookes seconded—" That the officer in charge of Police (Sergeant M'Cluskey) : be asked to recommend for the appointment one of the constables, at a. salary of £lO per annum." Carried. THE TOWN" CLERK. After some discussion, it was resolved and carried, on the motion of Cr. "Wilson, seconded by Cr. More- —i " That £SO be deemed sufficient security, in two sureties of £2s—-himself in £25 and another in £25." . SEWER. The notice of motion by Cr. Brown - " That an open sewer be constructed, commencing at the back of the, freehold property alongside Roach's Gully" 'r—was held over for the consideration of the special meeting to take place on Tuesday next. BORING RODS. Proposed by Cr. Wilson, seconded by Cr. Brown, and carried—" (1) . That, with a view to the development of the auriferous resources of this district, in ascertaining the existence or otherwise of deep leads, the Council accepts the offer made to the district by the Government, of the boring rods, now in possession of Mr. M.S. Duffy, of Hyde. Delivery te be taken, provided they are complete and serviceable. (2). That the deposit, if necessary, of £2O be taken from the Municipal funds, and lodged in the hands of the Provincial Treasurer, (3). That the Clerk be instructed to communicate with the Miners' Associationj asking that body to take charge of and use these boring rods, in such a manner as will, in the opinion of its members,/ be conducive to the development of our resources. (4). That, to assist ( the Miners' Association in the vigorous prosecution of this object, this Council agree to subsidise, at the rate of £2 to £l, to the extent of £IOO, - all moneys raised locally for this purpose." The Mayor was of opinion tliat' the amount of subsidy proposed was considerably in excess of the funds at the disposal of the Council. * The Council, however, held that money so expended would be judicious. FOOT-BRIDGE. The notice of motion by Cr. Busch, referring to the construction of a footbridge, &c., across Roach's Gully was referred to the Committee for General Purposes. . DRAINAGE. The notice of motion by Cr. Brookes in reference to the '-drainage at the brewery and Hall's cordial manufactory, was referred to the same Committee. ~v . BYE-LAWS AND STANDING ORDERS. It was proposed'by Cr. Busch, seconded by Cr. Brookes and carried—"That the Mayor, Crs. Wilson, de Lautouiy and the mover be appointed a Committee to frame and draw up bye-laws and standing orders, and to submit same for consideration of the Council." ACCOUNTS. Several accounts were referred to the Finance Committee. "VICTORIA HALL. The Finance Committee, on the proposition of Cr. Busch, seconded by Cr. Brown, requested the proprietor of the Victoria Hall to furnish the gommittee with his proposed monthly

charge for the use of the said building, and the room adjoining, at present occupied as the Town Clerk's office. The reply to be furnislied to the Finance Committee. , , ; . FOREST TREES. Proposed by Cr. Busch, seconded by Cr. Brook&s and carried—" That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to the Goldfields Secretary for 500 forest'trees, to "be distributed amongst persons having gardens within, the Municipality." . • SPECIAL MEETING. On the motion of Cr. Busch, seconded by Cr. Brookes, it. was resolved—"That a special meeting be called for Tuesday next, 18th inst., to consider matters of urgent importance." i Carried.
