Melbouene, April 25. The steamship Northumberland has arrived, after a fifty-three days' passage. A shock of earthquake, near Melbourne, lasted for twenty seconds. A magnificent present has been sent to Prince Bismarck by the Germans in Victoria. There has been a great panic in Sandhurst—Hustler's stock has sustained a heavy fall. There are five cases of murder at the Bathurst assizes,-Sydney. The Government intend to subsidise the new Anglo-Australian Company via, the Cape to the extent of £32,000 a year, for a monthly service of forty-two days out, and forty-four home. Michael Serigne, a Communist prisoner, escaped from the French transport; hid himself in a lighter's boat, and swam ashore, and was not arrested as a political prisoner on British soil. , ; A petition has been sentLhome by the mail in favor of Mount ancr Morris. Mr. Ireland, the barrister, has also petitioned on behalf of his son in Fiji against the proceedings of Captain C. Chapman, ofH.M.S. Dido.
