COAL DEVELOPMENT.
The following from the ' Hokitika Star' of a late date bears upon our article of last weekAs our readers are aware, Dr. Hector, the Government G-eologist, is now on a visit to the West Coast. One of the chief objects of his trip was to inspect and report on the coal measures lately discovered on the Kanieri. Together with Mr. Denniston, the manager of the Coal Company, and IVUr. H.Meyer, ha: proceeded to the spot immediately after arrival, and a meeting of the shareholders was held, to hear his report upon it. Though by no means unfavorable, . the result of his survey has not been what the most sanguine anticipated. The coal ' is of .good quality, but the area of the beds is limited in extent, not comprising, in Ms opinion, a full square mile. The east side of the workings have been thoroughly explored, but .though several seams have been found, none have proved profitably workable. On the west side the coal has only been imperfectly exposed, and more exploration is needed. Dr. Hector marked out a tunnel, which will prove the value of this portion of the mine, and has recommended the Government to have it driven. There can be no doubt that the suggestion will be accepted, and that the value, or otherwise, of the ground will be shortly ascertained. Whilst on his travels, the Doctor examined some of the quartz got on the right hand branch of the Kanieri, and reports most favorably as far as the limited time he had for examination allowed him to form an opinion. We may add that he leaves, here for Greymouth to-morrow, and it is a pity that his stay is so short.
