NOTES FROM ST. BATHANS.
. March 18th. A welcome change in the weather took place at the end of last week, and we. were favored with about thirty hours of heavy raiu ; this, however, has made but a slight addition to the quantity of water in the various races —the ground, on account of the long drought;'having absorbed the rain like a sponge. The sky has again cleared up, and we are apparently booked for a continuance 'of * dry ' ; weather for some time longer. 'The following.is the present state of our water supply : Scandinavian Race, 10 heads ; Mountain, 2 heads; Enterprise, 2 heads;
Mosquito, nil This ■is equal to 25 heads for twelve hours. The St: Bathans Water Works Company —formed for the purpose of introducing a supply of water into the Township, for domestic use—have commenced and are now engaged in the construction of their race. JN early the whole of the shares have been taken here, but in order to allow persons at a distance to participate ?n the profits of the undertaking, the company have resolved tj extend the time
for applications for the reniaining shares
to the 29th inst. : The shares are £5 • each,''payable by easy instalments, and the investment is certain to give good returns to the shareholders. Further particulars as to the scheme, may be obtained from Mr Wilson or Mr. M'Gre- ,: gor, Naseby.
The Montezuma Hotel and store, burned down some time ago, has been rebuilt on the original site,-and was opened on the 10th inst. by . a supper and ball,: when a good number of Mr. Mallon's. friends assembled -and enjoyed themselves' heartily. The new hotel has been built regardless of expense, and fitted throughout with every requisite for the comfort of host Mallon's patrons, it is quite an ornament to the west end of the Township. An accident attended with serious consequences —peciiuiarly at last—occurred here last week. Ahorse and buggy with its occupant, Mrs. John Davis of Welshmans, having been precipitated over a deep cuttting at the side of the road opposite the police camp. Mrs. Davis had a narrow escape, and sustained only a severe shaking. The bugpy suffered considerable damage; the spokes of one of the wheels having to be sawn off in order to extricate the horse, which was severely cut by falling amongst a lot of broken bottles. T trust the Progress Committee will take steps to prevent a recurrence of similar accidents, by having a low fence of some kind, put up at -this dangerous part of the road. The festivities on St. Patrick's Day were well attended. The weather was magnificent. Visitors' from Naseby, Blacks, Drybread, Hills .Creek, and Welshmans attended the pic-nic. The ball in the evening was a great success, and was well attended. The music was under the direction of Mr. J. Melvin, assisted by Mr. Speedy.
Resident Magistrate's Court, March 11th. (Before E. H. Carew, Esq., R.M.) The cases of Aubrey v. Keenan and Morgan, and Eochfort v. Turnbull were settled out of Court. An application -by Patrick Halloa under the licensing ordinance was granted. Messrs Pearce and Fraser applied for a general license for an Hotel on the line of water race to be constructed from the Manuherikia and were told that an application of that description could only be dealt with by a licensing Beach at a quarterly meeting.
Warden's Couet.—Maech 11th. (Before E. H. Car.ew, Esq., Warden.) Smart v. Thurlow and another.— This was an information that defendants had neglected to renew their water license for a race from Soldiers Gtally to the Two Mile, within the period required by the Goldfield Regulations. Convicted, and ordered to pay a penalty of five shillings in lieu of forfeiture of race,, and to pay costs of Court. The following; applications were granted. —Davies and another,, alteration of the line of their water race in
Welshiiians G-ully • M'Devitt, protection to.. his..claim at Biackstone Hill; Barron and another, protection to their claim at the Lagoon. Michael Fahey applied for an alteration of the head of his water' race from the Creek; and the application-was objected to by Gr. H. Smith on the ground that Fahey had abandoned his right through neglecting to commence cutting a race within one month of the d ite of 'his grant. The objection was over-ruled by the Warden, who said that a breach of the regulation (2 of 12) relied upon by Mr. Smith, did not create a forfeiture, but if proved upon an information laid for that purpose, was a matter to be met by a monetary penalty; not by forfeiture. The application was granted. John Thiirlow's application for a mining lease .at Soldiers' Oully was granted, subject to a right for a tailrace through the land, as indicated by the surveyor's plan. . Several applications for rights of water from the Dunstan Creek, opposed by the Channel Committee and others, were held over for decision at next sitting of the Court. Messrs. Williams, Hanrahan and party wrote offering to construct a ina'.n : channel, three miles long, in Muddy Creek, and allow all parties along its course to run tailings and tail water therein, provided the Grovernment would protect them by a special erant under sec xii, Groldfields Act, 1866. After explanation it was decided to further consider the matter at next sitting.
