We understand that, on Saturday, the "Warden visited the reefs at Shag Valley, with the object of inspecting the ground applied for by the Shag Valley Freehold Company, and objected to by the Perseverance Company. No decision was given upon the matter of the objection, it having been arranged, at the hearing of tlie Macraes Court, that the decision would be reserved until March the 1 st, to allow the parties, if possible, to arrange terms of compromise.
The Committee of the Miners' Association, established on Saturday evening last, held their first meeting on "Wednesday, in the Water Works Company's Office. All the members were present. The first business was the election of officers, with the following results : Mr. 'Eobert Ross, Chairman,„Mr? George Clarke, Secretary, Mr. H. B. M'intosh, Treasurer. The Secretary was directed to notify to the President of the " Otago Miners' Association," Arrowtown, the foundation _of this Association—their intention of sending a delegare to. the next Conference, and, in the meantime, their willingness to cooperate with the Arrowtown Executive in carrying out the object of the " Otago Miners' Association," also to open up commmunication with the following places, Hamilton, Sowburn, Hyde, Macraes, Serpentine, St. Bathans, Kyeburn, and Maerewhenua—asking their co-operation and support. It was arranged that future meetings ot the Committee should be held on the last Wednesday of every month, at 8 p.m. The Secretary informed the Committee that Mr. Greorge had kiadly offered the use of his room to the Association, which was accepted and recorded with thauks. The acting Commissioner of patents, England, has decided that Masonic symbols cannot be used as trade mai'ks.
The whalers at Malua, Hawke's Bay, had captured twenty whale up to the 13th ult. The nominations for the two principal events at the forthcoming annual meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club, were opened" on Monday evening, at the Empire Hotel, Dunedin, in the presence of the officers of the Club, and a good many persons interested in racing Prom, the number of the entries, it may be safely predicted that, with fine weather, the meeting will be one of the most successful yet held on the Eorbury course.—Forbury Handicap : Eicfeardson's Misfortune ; Eeany's Eoreiop ; Jeukin's Roebuck, by MasterEowe; O'Brien's Burgundy ; O'Brien's Wildboy ; Edgar's Empress j Pritchard's G-azelle ; Prit-. chard's Patch; Hazlett's Atlas; Hazlett's Brunette: Devine's Captain Scott; Captain Hutchison's Butterfly, late Flying Scud; Captain Hutchison's Mabel, by Scud; Captain Hutchison's Little IST ell; flastie's Lydia ; Pollock's Eosina ; Grourley's Bobby Burns; Inder's Malabar; Coo tube's Catapult; Derrifc's Tambourini : Derrit's Malice ; Nosworthy's Hatred ; Nosworthy's Mahce. The revised Citizens' Eoll bas now been published, and copies can be obtained at the Town Clerk's office. Mb. P.eaboe has again been successful in bis tender for contracts Nos. 3 and 4 oil the head race. The amounts of the different tenders have- not transpired, nor probably shall we know further till the whole cost'of the works
has to be summed up. Mr. Pearce started a few hands at work on Monday last, and now calls for 200 men to go to work at once. It would have . been more satisfactory to us to have seen some of our local tenderers successful, but it is evidently not to be. Whether bodies of miners are incapable of estimating costs of such undertakings, whether they are too timid, or wanting in combination and management, we do nob know. The results would certainly imply that all this was true. They have this, however, to fall back upon : that in their opinion the contracts at the rates accepted cannot be carried through and certainly the Engineer's estimates would encourage such an opinion. This remains to be proved, and till it is we certainly should hot growl that th cost of these public works is too little.
This English mail is advertised to close at Naseby on or about Monday, 3rd March, via Suez, and on Monday 10th March, via Wan Francisco.
Wje arc glad to learn that-Ronald M'Gregor, the carrier, was not so badly hurt as was at first reported. JNo rain has fallen, consequently the miners are idle. Wow that the drought has been so long continued, a great fall of rain would be necessary to give a permanent supply for sluicing purposes. As it is, men women and children are to be seen in the mornings and evenings trooping with buckets, kero-sine-tins, and billies to the pump. It is devoutly to be hoped that a change will soon take place. The Sludge Channel tenders for the sections have not as yet been accepted or declined. Further tenders sre called for the work in one lump "(about ten miles), which leads us to infer that t sorae of the tenderers have offered to construct the whole at a greatly reduced rate. If so, the G-jvernment has no alternative but to test the matter, and cannot justly be blamed for their action, although the enforced delay is peculiarly unpleaiant to all in the district, who, so lon°-, have had to feed on hope deferred. Ms. Danibli writes to us as to the way in which he has been treated by the Chief Postmaster, and the favoritism that has been extended to a rival coach company. We have already expressed our opinion nretty strongly as to the gross impartiality and mismanagement that has been shown in tha matter. The Energetic Company have determined to develop the reefs at Rough Ridge. Their application to register as a Limited Liability Company, will be seen in our advertising columns. The number of shares proposed to be issued is IGOO, of £5 each, of which 685 are already taken up. No support has yet been extended to this undertaking by the district. The. new Company have proved they can raise stone at one half the pi-ice the late Company did. It has been abundantly proved that great carelessness or very defective machinery, allowed great quantities of «-;old to escape the old management. Shares will be offered in the district, but will not be pressed, as they can be allotted elsewhere. All information can be obtained of Mr. C. F. Roberts.
At Mr. Douglas' sale, held last Saturday by Messrs. Inder and George, at their yards, some of the working hordes, brood mares, and young ones were knocked down at fair prices, only one cr two being withdrawn. At the sale of sundries in the evening, a number of parcels of books were bought by many in the room for the Hospital, tbe whole forming a fine addition to the library of the Institute. Mr. Rawlinshaw, the well-known traveller, and Mr. Gollett distinguished themselves in their purchases for this charitable purpose. We were shown yesterday a .requisition to the Chief Postmaster, Dunedin, praying that a branch Post Office be established at .Rough. Ridge. As this can be. done at no expense, the request will probably be acceded to.-,' ' . The ' Daily Times ' says :—A list of ..books which lately arrived from Britain to the'order of the Education Board, for public and school libraries, has just beea published. It comprises works in biography, history ; voyages, travels, adventures, &c.; science, philosophy, political economy, theology, arts, &c.'; poetry ; tales, novels, sketches, &c. : Temperance League publications and miscellaneous works. There are in the consignment no less thm 20 copies of the memoirs of Robert Chambers, by his brother William. The selection of books, on the whole, appears to be a very good one. The list conlains only a portion of the books ordered by the Board, and many popular English classics, not mentioned therein, have been ordered, but have not yet arrived. The Mount Ida District Hospital Committee beg to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of 30 volumes of books from Mr. Greorge Coliett, also 92 volumes from Mr. Eawlinshaw.
