NOTES FROM ST. BATHANS.

January 20. Nothing pf importance lias transpired here during the past ten days. A large number ot hands are still engaged in -washing up the public Sludge Channel, and, until this job is completed, sluicing in the basin must, perforce, remain in abeyance, as there is no outlet for the tailings. • It is expected that about 200oz. of gold will be taken out of the channel, and the Warden will give his decision on the 21st instant as to the division of the spoil. It 13 intended to wash up the old channel as ag the washing up of the new one is finished.

The weather continues cold and stormy, With occasional showers, and the races are Well supplied with water—a rare occurrence at this sesaon.

! The annual meeting for the election of a School Committee was held in the schoolroom on the 13th instant. The attendance, however, was so small that an adjournment till the 15th was agreed to. — The adjourned meeting was well attended, Mr. G. H. Smith occupied the chair, and, after a few introductory remarks, called upon the Secretary of the retiring Committee (Mr. Pyle) to give an account of their proceedings during the past year. This having been done, and the report adopted, Mr. Hanger proposed a. vote of thanks to the St. Bathans Dramatic Club for having, by means of entertainments, contributed during the past year the handsome sum of £33 ss. lid. to the school fund. This was seconded by Mr. Stewart and carried unanimously. The election of a Committee was then proceeded with, when the following gentleIn en were duly elected:—Messrs. j. Cortnick, G. H. Smith, J. Melvin, J. Morton, W. Pyle, S. Hanger, R. Wheeler, J. Ewing, and W. MConnochie. A vote of thanks to the retiring Committee, and to the Chairman for presiding, brought the proceedings to a close.

The Pace Committee having, in their anxiety to issue an attractive programme •at the last meeting, allowed their zeal to get the better of their discretion and gone beyond their means, are said to be unable to meet their engagements, and haves the pleasant alternative of saddling the next Committee with certain liabilities or defraying them out of their own pocket'. This is entirely the fault of the collectors, as a considerable amount in the shape of subscriptions is still in the hands of the subscribers. The collectors should set to work at once, and relieve the Club from their somewhat disagreeable position. The Progress Committee have forwarded a _ petition to the Waste Lands Board asking that the business sites may be surveyed and put up for sale. The Committee are also negociating with Mr. Gr« Purton, the Manager of the Scandinavian "Water Race Company, for the cutting of a race and supplying the township with water for domestic purposes.
