The Art Uniou of pictures, we- hear, is postponed till the 18th inst. A cowardly and murderous attack was made last week on Detective Farrell. A dark night and a lonely street, were circumstances favorable to the treacherous design. Farrell supposed the assassin to be ex-Constable Byan, who gave himself up, and defended himself in the Mayor's Court with coolness and dexterity. The Mayor refused, however, to allow bail, and the case stands adjourned for further enquiry.

The District Engineer, Mr. Duncan, arrived in Naseby, yesterday. • ; ? The Presbyterian Bazaar was held last we6k, ~- and resulted in a much greater amount of I success than its best friends could wish, or we confess than we expected. £237 6s. was raised by the Bazaar and the subscriptions to the building fund. The room was very tastefully got'up,-and tlie determination of th& lady-sellers very great, and not needlessly so, for victims having been taught wisdom at a late meeting of a,simil-ir kind, were up to all sorts of evasions and dodges.. Everything, - however, was disposed of. either by private zeal on Thursday and Friday, or by the exertions of Mr. Inder, kindly .given on Satur- - day night. Where all, especially the ladies, * were so zealous, we really shrink from drawingattention to the special holders of. stalls.., Itmust however have been very gratifying *to the Committee and their respected Minister, to see such cordial co-operation from all de- Y—nominations.
