THE Mount Ida Chronicle FRIDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1872.

Oue next number will be published in eighteen hundred and seventy-three. The present year, though not presenting great changes or .startling developments to the Mount Ida district, still, in spite of a disastrous season for gold mining, and consequent commercial depression, should not be allowed to pass away into;? the vast limbo of unredeemed possibilities, without a word of commendation—without the least sigh of regret. It has been philosophically said, "Happy are the people whose " annals are vacant." To what extent truisms applied to old countries are applicable to new ones, is hardly a matter worth enquiry Certainly, if the above paradoxical rule holds good ia New Zealand, we should be a singularly blessed people in Mount Ida, and the Colony generally most miserable. Looking forward to 1873, we have, however, confidence in congratulating the district on what may be considered a certain sure prospect of stable success, to last for many years. Over and over again we have been assured by all officials in power, of whatever shade of politics, that the detailed report of the Provincial Engineer is alone what is needed for the immediate commencement of the Sludge Channel and Manuherikia Water Usee. This report, we have reason to believe, is highly conu :tion of these works, and has now the ha.ads of the Government . for scute days.
