MR GLADSTONE'S SON.

With reference to the notice of a London Correspondent on the ."nomination of Mr. Stephen Gladstone to the family living of Ha warden,, we have received from one who has excellent means of information the following particulars:—" Mr. Stephen Glad-| stone passed through his career at the! University, where hc-'distin-ruished himself by his'industry, talent and his high moral charater,' without any other intention than that of pursuing some secular vocation. But gradually his mind turned in the direction of holy orders. On this he betook himself to the College at Cuddesdon, near Wheatly, where, along with his cousin, the Hon. E. M. Lytteltcn, and Mr. E. Talbot, the present Warden of Keble College, he prepared himself by two years of special study for the ministry of the Cnurch under the able guidance of the llev. Canon King. When he was ordained, he chose for himself no pleasant and easy sphere of duty, but he plunged at once into the slums of Lambeth, where, as curate to the llev. liobert Gregory,- he has ever since his ordination been laboring among the lowest and most degraded of' the London population. Denying, himself the refined and intellectual si - ciety of his father's house, Mr. Gladstone has been among the people of his choice, and has greatly endeared himself to them. I can conceive no more thorough training for the duties of the Rectory of Hawarden than the years which he has spent in the purlieas of St. Mary's, Lambeth."
