. With reference to th.3 scratching of Peeress,- the ' Post' says : —We hope tike whole Press of the Colony will condemn, with unmistakable language, the transaction in conhe .-tiou with the- sale o'f Peeress. Wo are not, and " probably never shall be, in possession of the fall facts of the case, but we have no doubt before the Canterbury Jockey CuU T passed such-a' resolution as the one disqualifying, the mare from running on any course whoie it's rules are observed, the/ must have been satisfied that matters locked dark. We cm oniy say it is with extreme regret we see the name of Mr. Hedwood, whohas always stood high in the of others as a man who invariably ran his-horses on die straight, mixed up in the slightest degree in a-mit- ■' ter to which very hard names are givs-su Let anyone look down-the list of entries? for the. Metropolitan: meeting, and he-, will see that the effect of■■ scratching; Peeress ;cnu!d only be to make - Yahterina, first favorite for many erenls. We cans imagine a set of men backing Yatterina--so heavily, as to make it worth their while • to bay and scratch her only dangerous ■ rival. Bus wo won't characterise such a • transaction. At the same trme,..the resoiu- - turn passed by the Canterbury Jockey Club, is peculiar. -It certainly' lowers -■- the value of the mare one-half, and' ; is an . expresidn of opinion that will cause- iVlr. • Walter's name to be known through- - " out I lie Colonies; but it appears- tous that the man, and no'; the marc, --. should Ijiave been disqualified. We shall--.. . be curious to-see what the Canterbury" papers have to say about the matter. Sale : of - Thoroughbred Stock. — Messrs Bird and Beuuet, of Chrislrhurch held their annual saleoi the thoroughbred stock on the 13th inst., but a very small proportion of the horses offered changed hands. The attendance waa numerous, . but the bidding was devoid of animation. The lots disposed of were as follow E edwood's ch esn u t col t Papapa, by TJ avensworth, out of Waimea, nominated for the Derby. 1873, was knocked down to the Ffon."W. Robinson for £3lO ; Mr. Redwood's Reliance to Mr. H. Prince for £SO; Mr." Griififchs's Gossip to Mr. N. Haines for £7;7 10s : ; Mr. Douglas's Dragon to Mr. Kay for £33 ; Mr. Doug- - las's Adonis to Mr. Baron for £3l ; Mr. Courage's Batsman io Mr. Brabazan for £45 ; Mr. Courage's Brunswick to Mr. Wall'is for- £3o ; Mr. Ball's General to - Mr. Cooher for £3O s the brocd mare Tarndaie, to Mr. Griffiths, for £35 ;. the brood mare Wing, to Mr. 11. rl. Campbell f»r £3l ; Slanderer, by Traducer, to Mr. Tancred, .for £40.. Several other horses were sold, but none of any note. Mr. Walters' Peeress was put up, but did not reach the reserve of £3n0 —450 was the highest bid, and was therefore passed. Mr. Nosworthy's splendid entire Talisman was also offered, but no one ventured near the mark at which he was to be sold. The reserve was £IOOO, bnt there was no honafide Teranga; Dead Shot, Xakapo, Awatea,. Mv~tery, and Malvina, together with Mr Griffiths' Defamation, were offered, but none of them reached the reserve put upon them, and wcra th.. refore- passed. The following is the address which was presented to the members of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Tr. was largely and inauentially signed : —" To the members of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Gentlemen —We, the undersigned, desire to ; thank you for the fearless manner .in which you have discharged a very responsible duty, in your decision in the 'Peeress case,' and we fully concur in the opinion that the adoption of any other c mrse would have effectually ruined racing in Canterbury." The Tuapeka race meeting has been fixed for the 20fch and 2ist February.
