WATER SUPPLY ON GOLDFIELDS.
In the General Assembly, Mr. Macandeew aske-1 the Minister for Public Works—What practical steps, if any, the Government, propose to adopt with a viewto the immediate application of a portion of the Public Works Loan towards Water Supply for Naseby, Blacks, Carriek, and other Goldfields in the Province of Otao-o ? Mr. Eeid replied that the Government had no further information in its possession in regard to this work than what had been laid on the table of the House in the report from Mr Simpson, C.E" A survey of the Manuherikia watershed was being made, in order to deter* mine whether a large supply of water could be obtained from that locality, and when the survey was completed and the report in possession of the Government, it was their intention to proceed with the construction of the work, assuming, of course, the report of the engineer to be such as to justify the Government in incurring the expenditure. / : Mr Mervyn asked whether, supposing''the report of the engineer on the supply of water that could be obtained from the Manuherikia were unfavorable, the Government would, be prepared to consider an alternative scheme. Mr Reid said that if the report of the engineer were unfavorable, the Government would be prepared to consider any other proposal that would accomplish the object desired.
