EWING'S CASE.

(Totke Editoroi the Mount Ida. Chronicle.)

Sir,—Tour new correspondent for this place has—inadvertently, I am sure—failed to notice an important meeting of the resident miners and business people regarding the abovenamed *ase. The meeting was convened on the evening of the 9th inst., ; for the purpose of adopting a petition praying for the free pardon of John Ewing, which petition emanated solely from the residents of this district. Of the meeting itself there was but a. few hours' notice, yet it was largely and influentially attended. The petition (which was unanimously adopted) was wisely temperate in tone, as also minute and truthful in its relation of all the incidents which led up to the unfortunate wounding of the gold-stealing Chinaman. Of Ewing's imprisonment the prevailing, nay, the unanimous opinion throughout the district is that it has lasted long enough to satisfy the ends of Justice, and that the Majesty of the Law would in no wise suffer by yielding to the prayer of the petitioners for his free par'on. Trusting you will kindly give insertion to these few lines, bearing, as they do, on a case in which, and with, the subject of which, the St. Bathans public feel the greatest interest and deepest sympathy, I am, &c, One who Attended the Meeting. St. Eathans, Sept. 22.
