THE RUSH TO THE ROPER.
The exciteinenfc i espeeting the Roper "River Diggings would, if.We are able to judge from tlie latest telegram (published below), appear to be somewhat, if not altogether, premature, and it would be well that the miners of this place should consider twice before leaving a certainty for an uncertainty —a substance for a shadow. We do not attempt to say that the times here have not been dull—very dull. Still, we do not think that they will continue to,remain so. In all probability the Sludge Channel will soon be commenced, and the prospects of the place evea more in the ascendant. . Pause therefore, we say, before any leave to follow what may yet turn out to be a veritable will-o'-the-wisp perhaps a second Port Curtis. The following is the telegram above referred to : ''The rush to Charters Towers has been checked. Late telegrams state that the lead has run out."
