MAEREWHENUA.
(From our cwn Correspondent.)
I regret to -report, an accident from earthfall which occurred here last week, by which a young man named Daniel M' Vicar was seriously, though, I trust, not dangerously bruised. He was taken to the Oamaru Hospital. I The water supply is at- present good, and everybody busily employed. "Water has been so rare a commodity of late that one and all seem determined to make the most of it. The present supply :s the best known since these diggings opened. I am of opinion that when the different washings-up take place there will be. a good show of gold. Tlie Band of Hope Company are working night and day, the manager being determined to test the real value of tlie ground as soon "as possible. Botting's claim looks well,, and improves as it goes back into the hill. Avery's claim is also highly spokeirof. The Golden JI ill Company have a splendid prospect before them; they have, however) a large bank of mullock to contend with, which once through, the ground will be free and easily worked. This Company are employing eight men on their head race, and are talking of putting on still more. hands in order to get the work .completed before Christmas. Once well finished, this race will be one of the favorite races on this side of the river. With regard to the ilaerewhenua Bacc' a party, of miners from the Hogburn have taken the bull by tlie horns and started at the main - supply, and are bringing the water after them. This is the proper way, as the race will be then staunched and in good working order so soon as completed. It would have been well had some of the larger companies had such a man as Mir. Kermode to have looked af:er their interests. The Mosquito is not yet finished. Want of timber, conjoined with the broken weather, has been a great drawback and source of annoyance to this Company. The Ben Lomond Ccmpnny arc cutting a deep tail race into their claim. They have had a hard bank of cement and another of.elay to get through before they could reach the Happy-go-Lucky shaft. I They got within thirty feet of the shaft, and are, I believe, satisfied with the prospects obtained at the. end ; of the tail race. Nimmo.and party are expected to have a good washing 500n,., with, any amount of good ground **till before ; them for some time to come. Cooper and party have two elaims about a mile apart, both lof which will, it" is anticipated, pay handj some wages. Bandeenand Shaw are usI ing tail water in their claim, and are well pleased with the gold they arc getting in , their tail hex. , They are expecting to | wash up in about six weeks.. Shares,in Howe and party's race have gone [ up lately.
la The township there is .quite a stir! The new store is up, and two waggons | and two bullock teams of goods have al- , ready arrived. The store is very substan- ; ti&lly built —no expense, appears to have been spared. It is lined sides, roof, and .floor. A bakery is also being now erected in conjunction with it. A,.new hotel has
also been built;; I, however, consider the undertaking as somewhat premature. The present hotel is about lo.be enlarged for the accommodation of visitors. Ifc must be gratifying to erery wellwisher of this, place to notice the steady progress which it has made during the last year. Twelve months ago ifc'would Mare been, difficult to. find. a. merchant willing to credit for £5, but last week goods to the amount of fully £IOOO were brought here; My own opinion- with regard to this place is that ifc will yet prove to be one of the .favorite; G-oldfiekU, not not only in this Province, but probably in jNew Zealand.
