LORD CHIEF-JUSTICE COCKBURN ON THE ALABAMA QUESTION.
The ' Boston Advertiser' gives the following extract from a private letter, in which an American gentleman describes an interview with Chief-Justice Cockburn :
His Lordship said, in reference to the relations of Europe and the United States —".I trust reason and common sense will prevail. Both England and America can only lose and cannot possibly gain anything by a war. The United States have the exceptional opportunity of not only obtaining a large allowance covering every possible direct injury done by the Alabama and consorts, have had the chance by a wise use of their advantageous position in this controversy to establish themselves in the estimation of the world as a high-minded nation, affirming thereby their financial credit in the world making it in time equal to the credit of England and Germany, and gaining character and enormous wealth by fifty years at least of undisturbed peace. All depends upon how this case is managed. The United States cannot possibly gain anything by a war, which would be a phantom compensation for what they would lose in consequence of war, even if human blood and human happiness counted for nothing."
