RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.—June 1.
(Before H. W. Robinson, Esq., R.M.) Daniel Carrutbers, arrested by the police on suspicion ot'having stolen a gold watch and. appendages from trie premises of Mr. Luks, Waihemo, was, upon the application of the Sergeant of Police, remanded till Monday, for the appearance of Mr. Luks. Monday, June 3.
Daniel Carruthers, charged with stealing a gold watch and appendages, the property of Mr. John Bernard Ludwig Luks, was brought up on remand. Prisoner pleaded guilty. Upon being asked by the Magistrate, J. B. L. Luks stated that, upon the 21st. ult., the watch, chain. &c., were hanging in the bar of his licensed house the W aihemo Hotel, the ordinary clock being out of repair. Tbg,t he was
called froiuthebar a few minutes in tlie afternoon of that day on .matters connected with his establishment, and that, upon his return, he missed the watch. Upon making enquiries of Mrs. Luks, aud the people about the house, no information could be obtained, and that his suspicions immediately fell upon the accused, who had come up in a waggon, who had been loitering about the place, and whose looks he did not like. That he accordingly sent a letter with a detailed description of the suspected party and the lost property. The property he now identified.
Sergeant M'Cluskey said that from information, received <?he had commissioned Constable .Nicholson to be on the look out, as he believed the accused had gone on to Hill's Greek. That the accused was arrested about a mile from Naseby, with the stolen property in his possession. Constable Nicholson proved the arrest, and the fact of the property being found upon the prisoner. The Magistrate, sentenced the prisoner to. two months' imprisonment in Dunediu gaol, with hard labor.
. Tuesday, 4th. (Before H. W. Robinson, Ksq., E.M. and W. G-rumitt, Esq., J.P.) ;, A t the Licensing meeting- the foi-; lowing applications.,were granted - James Cain, of Kyeburn ; and John Laverty, of Hyde. The consideration of the application of John Tait, of Naseby, was-adjourned for a fortnight for further police: report. A furt her charge was brought against Daniel Carruthers of stealing from the Kyeburn Hotel on the 26th. ult., sundry articles of clothing to the value of 305., the. property of Donald Sutherland. employee of Mr. Malloch, the proprietor of the hotel. The .property was identified by Mr. Sutherland, and the prisoner, having pleaded guilty, was committed to Dunedin gaol for one uidnth, to be cumulative on former sentence.

A number of alterations were made in the Electoral • Roll by the- striking out of the names of several persons who had been objected to, and in some cases the substitution of one qualification for another when it was proved to the satisfaction of the Revising Officer that the person had never left, and was still resident in the district.
