At the Court of Appeal, Wellington, yesterday, the Attorney-General appeared against Mr. Smythies. The case was adjourned to enable Mr Smythies to amend hispetitoin.
A. disastrout fire occurred in Timaru on Monday last. The fire took place in the Ship Hotel, and proceeded right and left, extending to the k Gazette ' office oih the one side to an empty shop on the other. After the ' Gazette ' office was consumed the flames extended to Hutton's grocery store, thence to Sheen's sailmaker's shop, and from there to Mr. Cockroft's, watchmaker, where it burnt itself out. It was feared at one time that the fire would take possession of the other side of the street.
, following are the places consumed : —Ship Hotel, restaurant,; photographic studio, \ Gazette ' ofljce, grocery, sailmaker's and watchmaker's premises.
