MOUNT IDA TRADE ASSOCIATION.— SPECIAL MEETING.
A large meeting of the Mount'"lda Trade Association was held in the Empire Hotel, on Wednesday evening last. Mr. James Thomson in the chair; The business for which the meeting was called was in reference to the" proposed. Sludge Channel. ' The Secretary (Mr. Craig) read the minutes of last meeting, which 5 were adopted. The Chairman stated that the business for which the meeting was- called was to consider what steps it wifulll he advisable to take in making Unown to the Government the absolute necessity for the immediate construction of a Sludge Channel.
Mr. Armstrong, M.P.C. (who was present), in reply to a question, said that lie did not think a memorial would much effect on the Government A sum of money had been voted .out of the Loan for the purpose of carrying out the necessary surveys in connection with the proposed Sludge Channel and Water Supply. The Superintendent had informed him that no money could be given from the Provincial Exchequer for the purpose. He (Mr. Armrt ong) did not think that there would he much use in memorialising the General Government until next sitting, when, if the surveyor's report should be favorable, a memorial would strengthen the cause. Mr. Inder thought that the matter could not be too strongly urged on the Government, as it was of the utmost importance that the works should be commenced at once. After a long and interesting discussion, Mr. Hunter proposed—" That a memorial be drawn up for signature without delay, to be forwarded to the General Government on receipt of the Engineer's report." Carried. Mr. Smith proposed, and Mr. Glenn seconded —" That the framing of the memorial be left in the hands of the director*." Carried.
Mr. Inder proposed, and Mr. Alexander seconded —" That circulars be printed, urging upon the members of both the House of Kepresentatives and the Legislative.Council to support the
! prayer of the memorial; the drawing up of the circular to be left in the hands of the directors." Carried. Tbe draft petition regarding the deviation of the road round the Houndburn Hill was read and adopted, and copies ordered to be distributed for signature.
Mr. Smith proposed that circulars be printed and sent to the members of the Provincial Council, calling upon them to support the prayer of the petition. Carried. After a vote of thanks to Mr. Armstrong, M.P.C., the meeting, which was a full and unanimous one, broke up.
