INQUESTS.
An inquest was held on the 16th; ihst, at Collett's Ancient Briton Hotel,! before H. W. Kobinson, Esq.,, coronor, on view of the body of Erasmus Lahsen. Evidence to the following effect was given : —John Ross deposed, on oath, that on the fifth of March, about two p:m., while working with his? mates rim the claim he was called by a B'wp : erd; whose name he did not know, to a claim at a short distance -where I; saw de-, ceased lyin;r under a la~ge lump of earth. The earth was On the body, the head and face being exposed. Four of us were with difficulty able: to remove> the lump of earth. He was sensible when we got him out. I went for the doctor, who returned with me. We carried him down to Collett's; Ancient Britofi Hotel. Deceased used to work ; alone, and I had warned him that the ground was dangerous.-r-Magnus Tait,. miner, being sworn, corroborated an all essential ; particulars the evidence of the last witness.—Dr. Jtf'Cambridge, a' legally qualified raelical man, deposed on oath that, being called to:the, claim, of the deceased on the sth .found Mm in a s f ate of collapse, caused by injuries which! was' given ;to understand had resulted from a tall of'earth. "Upon examination I found that he had sustained a dislocation of the Jeft shoulder joint, and several contusions about the region of the heart and other parts of the body. I: subsequently attended him till his death at Collett's: Hotel. Deceased died from the injuries I have described, and which were such as might have been occasioned by'a fall of earth. ; Verdict — Ihat death-was 3 occa- 5 sioned by injuries, the of a fall of earth. : , /
Monday. Mabcie 18. An inquest was held at the' Pass Hotel, Kyeburn, on the morning of the 18th, before H. W. lto'binson, Esq., co ran or, on view of the body of Edwin Alexander George, who died under th 3 following circumstances :—The following evidence was., adduced : Mary G-eorge, widow, of deceased, on oath, deposed to the effect that for the last two years th e deceased had not been right in his, mind, and that for the last two..months he had. been worse. He had lately been , .getting v e'ry weak, and had been confined to his bed some days before death. v No medical man attended, him. I gave him nutritious ■food -with very little''stimulant. His .illness was. originally brought on by excessive driukinij:. .. Some two years ago, he was suffering from an attack of delirium tremens and, I sent him to the
Dunedin Hospital. When be returned he was much better, but he resumed his habit of drinking. ' He died on the 17th March. . I was not with hiin at jthe time, having left himi a few minutes. Wben.last I saw him l thought he was in.a dying state, but expect him to die so soon. He had been very quiet for about ten tours.—Samuel Hornby, being sworn, corroborated the evidence of the previous witness.—Dr. M'Cambridge, on oath, stated that he had made a post mortem examination, arid considered death (from reasons which he assigned) to have been the resu]t of excessive drinking. He had not attended him during his last illness, as the place was too distant. He had attended him on ! a former occasion when suffering from delirhim ire ens, upon which occasion 1 agreed to ; his being sent to Dunedin. -A verdict to rhe effect that death had resulted from intemperate habits was returned.
