Sixteen :Chinainen were hanged by the mob, and, manv of the Chinese houses" w^re set on "fire. The mob was composed mainly of native Californians :and. the dregs ofso-. ciety. All the :. Chinese that were hanged were frightfully beaten and maltreated before hanging. The po~ lie force acted disgracefully in aidinoand abetting the rioters. Th 5. witnesses before' the coroner's jury are apparently, reluctant to give evidence, fearing they will implicate two-Irishmen who boasted of as-* sistmg m killing the Chinese. Only lour of the rioters have been arrested r rom 14,000 to 30,000 dollars, and all the valuables belonging to the Chinese were carried oft" by the mob, and even those arrested were robbed on their way to gaol.
