ST. BATHANS.

(To the Editor of the Mount IdjlCkko.yiclb.) I beg yuu will insert the following columns A party recently applied for 5 of the 51 head* of water used by the public for flushing f>krpos«es from the Dunstan Creek. ;\V the Government granted the puniic the use of the water th»'re were about 32 tail races, with a fall of about an inch to .the foot; and now there are only 14 ta.l races working at from 3* to 6 inches to 12 feet, consequently the bait of the flushing water would be now sufficient. The applicants are miners holding ground not sufficiently rich to pay. at the rate of £4< per head per week tor water. Betore applying they got the consent of all the miners working in the basin, with the exception of a few who were interested in water races here; The water, after using it, would run in the saine course again, and could do no possible ha rin to any existing rights, head of water aiienated from St. Bathans basin would be an injury, but in this case it is different. The water companies refuse to cheapen the water rate, and through their opposition were the cause of the application to bring in more w?ter being r^fu^od; consequently, by preserving the water monopoly, anid keeping the water up to its present price, the m ning population must leave. It the Government policy of populating <)ta«;o will be successful, I think t the decision of Mr. Warden. Carew j w ill uave quite an opposite effect as reigards St. Bathans.—l am, &c., Ta.il Race.
