THE HEATHEN CHINEE.
We some time back received the following telegram from the President of the Arrow" Miners' Association :
Has Dobit obtained signatures to any 'Chinese petition from Arrow Association ? If so, request him to forward them without delay.
Iji our reply we stated that no such, person as " Dobit" had yet made his appearance at this place, A few days since we were surprised at the receipt of the following letter, which we look upon as disclosing another gem in the long list of telegraphic blundering :
Awrowtown, Oct. 19, 1871. To the Editor ' Mount Ida Chronicle.' Deab Sib, —We have to acknowledge .receipt of a telegram from you stating that "Dobit had not arrived yet." This we take to mean "Roberts had not," &c. We forwarded -copy of our petition on "Chinese question to Mr. Chas. JF. Roberts, , Naseby, who represented your district at the late Mining Conference, requesting his to obtain signatures. We •have bad no reply from him, and fear that our letter has miscarried. We now forward a letter which you would oblige us by publishing, hoping that it will induce some of your miners to come forward and aid us in the movement.
Thanking you on behalf of the Arrow Miners' Association, and in -the interests of the mining community throughout the Province, for your courtesy in replying to ♦our telegram
We remain, &c, Aebow District Minees' Association, Per Saml. Symonds, Secretary.
■ln farther connection with the " Heathen Chinee " question we have received • another communication from the Secretary \of said Association, with the subjoined address to the miners of .Naseby. It would •seem aetdon would, at the .present vt&ne, be so far as the House of Representatives is concerned, tihe-Chinese Committee haying reported, by a majority <)f one, that there is no need for interference : —- Arrowtown, Oct*.'* 23, 1871. ;H. Wilson, Esq. Peak Sib,—T herewith enclose copy of Anti-Chinese Petition, as forwarded by us to Mr. C. Haughton, M.H.E., with nearly 30Q0 signatures attached. 'To THE MINEES OF NASEBY DISTBICT (Per favor ' Mount Ida Chronicle.')
Tke Committee of the Arrow District Miners' Association have forwarded with this communication a copy of their petition to the Assembly on the Chinese question, a copy of which, with about 3000 signatures obtained from miners and residents ■on the Goldfields has been forwarded to Wellington. They have to request your co-operation •to obtain signatures in your district. If •you would call a meeting and. appoint a '< Committee to carry out that object you .would be lending valuable assistance to this movement, which has for its object the placing an effectual check upon the further influx of Chinese into Otago. Should such a Committee be formed, they would oblige by forwarding any signatures they may obtain direct to Wellington, to Mr. C E. Haughton, M.H.R. (our representative), to be attached to the petition. They also forward herewith a eopy of their prospectus and rules, which may be of utility should you be disposed to form an association of like nature, such societies having been formed at Waipori, Waitahuna, and Switzers. [The petition above referred to appeared in our columns a few weeks ago, and still lies at this office for signature,]
