VOLUNTEERING.

It will be within the recollection of most of our readers that, some twelve months back, a number of gentlemen resident in this place tendered (through Lieut.-Col Cargill) their services to the Government as a Volunteer Corps to be called the Mount Ida Kifles. In reply to their offer the following answer has been received by LieutenantColonel Cargil. and has been placed at our disposal for publication :

Militia and Volunteer Office, Wellington, 28th Sept., 1871

Sik, —Adrcrting to your letters (numbers and dutes as per margin), and to my telegram of the 26th instant, respecting the offers of service of the undermentioned Volunteer Corps: —Tuapeka Rifle Rangers, Whakntipu Rifles, Mount Ida Rifles, Tapanui Rules, Peninsula Rifles, Blueskin Rifles, Fortobello Rifles, Otepopo Rifles. 1 have the honor to refer you to my circular (No. 72) of the 26th instant, by which you will see that the Government have decided that, for the present, they will not rer commend his Excellency to accept the services of any more new Volunteer Corps. Will you be good enough to convey to the gentlemen who have signified their desire to belong to the proposed corps the thanks of the Government lor their offer, and also their regret that such a leugth of time has elapsed before their applications were decided on.
