ST. BATHANS
At the usual fortnightly sitting of the Courts at St. Bataans on the Oth inst., the only case for hearing was one brought on the information of Constable Morton against Samuel Hanger, charging him witn neglecting to cleanse a drain. Tie evidence failed to prove either that the drain was upon uer'on* daut's premises or was used by him, and the case was dismissed. in the Warden's Court the following grants were made : Sutherland and others, protection; Samuel Sutherland, extended claim; M' Devitt and another, protection; Sutherland and others, water race; Mann Wade, extended, claim ; John Ewing, protection. An application by Alfred Hill, for protection for three months to his claim at Kildare Hill, was opposed by Samuel Turner, on the ground that the reason assigned for protection being necessary —namely, a want of water —did not exist, ami that the company of which he was manager would supply water, provided Hill would pay a debt due them for water supplied to the claim when in possession of the men from whom Hill obtained it. It appeared that the other companies bringing water to the neighborhood of the claim would supply water only on the same condition. The Warden decided to grant protection for two months, auu told applicant that he must make arrangements for working the ground by theexpiration of that period, as he did not think it likely that any further protection would be grunted. —The hearing of the application of vV llliam Smart for a mining JLease at Welshman's Gully was adjourned to the 20th October, to enable the Surveyor's plan and report to reach the Warden's oiiice.
