INQUEST.
the Coronor, H. \V Robinson, Esq., bein-4 absent at t!ie Maerewhenua, an inquest into the causes which led to the death of Malachi Wvan, took place at t'ie Melbourne Hotel, on Wednesday last, before a jury, William Grumltt, Esq., acting coroner, presiding. T:io first witness, Timothy O'Brien, deposed that on the L7th of October, while engaged with deceased in undermining a lart»e lump of . earth, which had been det; ched from the face of their claim on ."Surface Hill, a portion of the lump jjave way suddenly striking deceased on the head a id legs, jamming him at the same time a ainst the wall of the tail race. The witness at once rushed to the assistance of the deceased, at the same time calling out tor help to the miners of an adjoining claim, wh>, hearing the cries/ran up to assist, an 1 while three men were engaged ext.ri ;,- ting the deceased from under the loose earth, the fourth ran off for Dr. M'Cambridixe. It took about ton minutes to remove the clods and earth, but during that time deceased's head was ex <osed, and from his mouth and ears blood flowed freely. The witness believed that the deceased wa« instuneously killed by the blow inflicted by the fallen lump, which was sever d tons weigh t. Launcelot Hore, on beinjx sworn. Corroberated the evidence of O' linen in regardJJto the position he found deceased in on his arriving at. the scene of the ccident—their joint efforts to extricate the body—and to the tact that one of witness's ::;ates started off for the doctor as soon as he had observed what had occurred
Dr. was then examined, and after describing the injuries that had been inflicted on the body of deceased, he remarked that death must have bevii iuustautaueous, as the teia;jo-
