HOSPITAL MEETING.

The public meeting convened by notice written, we presume, under instructions from his Honor the Superintendent, for the purpose of electing tie first officers and Managing Committee, took place at the Oddfellows' Hall, Hunter's Empire Hotel, on the evening of Kriday last, the I3t'i in*t. The meeting was not so fully attended as we could have desired, and as we expected to have seen.

H. W. Robinson, Esq., having been called to the chair, after a few preliminary remark", called upon Mr. E. T. George to read the letter from Mr. Under-Secretary Willis, intimating the cailing of the present meeting. The following is a copy of the letter alluded to : Provincial Secretary's Office, Dunedin, 4th October, 1871. Sib,—Referring to your letter of the 'lßth ultimo. I have now been directed to acquaint you that the provisions of the Hospitals Ordinance, 1802, have been extended to the Naseby Hospital, and that the first public nu-eting of contributors lias been called for tne L3th day of October instant. The necessary notices will appear in the 'Gazette' of tlie llt h instant.

It was impossible to comply with the request that the meeting should be called for the 9r,h, inasmuch as fourteen days' notice is required to be given, and the Government, were unable to deal with the application of the Committee until yesterday. Mr. E. T. GkorGiS, Hon. Sec., next read a resume of tlie entire proceedings of the Provisional Committee since its election, and stated that the present position of tie Hospital stood thus

Total ... ... £3OB 15 0 while a number of lists had yet to come in. 'The ecretary then stited that the labors of the Provisional Committee had ceased.

A vote of thanks to the retiring Committee was carried with acclama-; tion.

In acknowledging the compliment, the Chairman said that the lists of subscribers, &<•, would be handed over to the Committee to be elected that evening.

The Chairman next called attention to vari.u.s clauses of the Hospitals Ordinance bearing upon the subject of the election of Offi -ers and Committee of Management, and expressed an opinion hostile to the well working of iart_re Committees. He (the Chairman) next explained who were eligible to vote for the Committee, and drew attention to the method of voting, and the number of Committee whom they decide to elect.

Mr. John Dillon suggested that each of the outlying districts should be represented in any Committee which rniijht be elected, a suggestion in which the Chairman cordially coincided. Proposed by Mr. (>. Stevens, seconded by Mr. (j-. Collett, and carried That the name of the proposed institution be 4 The Mount Ida District Hos.utal.' "

Proposed by Mr. Eugene O'C.vllaghan, seconded by Mr. M. Brookes, and carried —" That the Committee consist of eighteen members—twelve to be chosen from residents in and about Naseby, and one member from each of the outlying districts of Ky.eburn, Hamilton, Hyde, Hill's Creek, St. Bathans, and fSerpentine."

After a desultory conversation, The Chairman said that; the duty of the present meeting was to elect Officers and Managing Committee for the

An amendment by Mr. Tndeji, to substitute the name of Grumitt for that of Strat ord, and St/aiford for George, was withdrawn.

Mr. Koss proposed, and Mr. Filatek seconded—That the Committee be .authorised to prepare rules for the management of the affairs of the Institution -such rules to be submitted to a meetiny[ of the su.iscri' ers for confirmation and adoption, not later tb in tin first annual meeting, in.January n«xt; but that in the meantime the Committee be authorised to make such r lea as may be necessary for the initiation of the institution, an 1 for its ment until a code of rules shall be adopted-by the contributors at a general meeting." Carried.

On the motion of Mr. A. Simpson, a vote of thanks to the Chairman con. eluded the proceedings.
