THE Mount Ida Chronicle. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1871.

A <ntossn« specimen of oifieial biun* tl-.ritu: tiian that which hascharacterised the -.vmduct of the Provincial Government, with regard to the IL* •n :\''':rient' : airo, it would be dilfi'ult to i ii uiti''. 1 ivtea.i of the building being, ' a«t it h jouM have s-eeii by this time, : built, ami the whole mtehinerv iairlv ill irjvM »u, we find ourselves, at the end of U;,«\var.'is .of; two mouths, not one w »it advanced —in fact, ill that has heen don't 1 , will have to be done over j again, "asthe' meeting. of which a report wiifWYoutid elsewhere, has turned out io be .wholly and entirely illegal. T- is almost. ridiculous state of affairs I has not-arisen Iroin any fault of the I Provisional Committee, who have i thr>»u ;hi>ut conducted their proceedings, in a higi lv satisfactory and coin- ; !ivndahle manner, hut from monstrous blundering on the part of j the Government. In reply to a letter } frofii the Provisional Committee, re- ! qti' stin j; that the provisions <.f the Hospital Ordinance might he extended to the Mount 1 n Hospital, and solicitthat t:R' first, meeting of subscribers for the purpose of electing a Committee of Management, be convened by his Lie nor the Superintendent for the 9th of t :e present month, Mr. Cndei-Se-retarv Willis writes a letter, a copy of which will he found in the report of the recent meeting. In this letter Mr. Willis states that the provisions of the Hospital Ordinance have been extended to Naseby, and that the first meeting has been appointed to take place on the 13th instant, and that due notice will appear in the 4 Oazette" of the 11th. I pon the faith of this communication, a meeting was held on the day named (Friday, 13th), at which the officers and Committee were duly elected, the meeting not breaking u:> till long after midnight. On the following day the 'Gazette' makes its appearance, and we find that, instead of the meeting being convened for the 13th, as stated in the Under-Secretary's letter, it is called for T -ettday the thirtieth day of October. This one would have thought to have been sufficient bungling—the thirteenth for the thirlieth but reference to the almanac discloses the fact that Tuesday is the thirty-first and not the thi-tieth day of October; thus the notice is again wrong, and no meeting can possibly be held under it. Such is the position of the Hospital movement here at the present time, and for that unsatisfactory position we have no one to thank or blame but the Government, whose whole conduct from first to last has been disgraceful in rhe extreme. If the Gover ment has means to keep Under-Secretaries and Clerks, they should take care to employ such only as know and are able to perfqrm tueir and not allow jjublio

business to be conducted (as it has been in the case to which we iare at present referring) iu a manner which cannot fail to bring ridicule upon it, and make it a laughing-stock in the eyeof the public throughout the length, and breadth of the Province. A MEKTI.va of the Presbyterian congregation will take place at the Masonic Hall. on the ■evening of Friday, 27th instant,' for tire purpose of electing a Managing Committee. The weather, since our bat issue, has been

of the most changeable and disagreeable character—high winds, with dust in abundance, \ and occasi nal heavy showers of rain or sleet, being the order of the day. Mimno operations are progressing satisfactorily, water still continuing in abundance. Whex recording last week the collapse of the Os.ekaike Reef, Maerewhenua, we should have stated that though, the reef itself has turned out a complete duffer, the reports with regard to the alluvial workings are of a decidedly favorable character. The horse nuisance lias become so grea*. that the police, have, we are informed," determine i to ti.ke action in the matter, 'arid will, uuless the nuisnice be abated or discontinued, tuk- proceeding-, under the town and country police Ordinance, against the owners, of all hordes running at large in and about the town of Naseby. '' Better late than never." InFOiiiiai'l'jx has reached us, from a source which we consider reliable, that the machinery formerly belonging to the Rough Ridge Quari z Mining Company, and which was some mont. s back sold to the Alta Company, and removed to Benligo Gully, Cromwell, is likely' to be brought back again to somewhere near its old locality. Tids would induce the belief thait •the prospects of the reefs in the viciiiity of R ,ug i Ridge are improving. Several persons with whom we hive spoken upon the subject hesitate not to predict a bright future for the Ro tg ; ; Riilge as a reefing district.. firewood for fuel is now beginning to get very scarce ou the surrounding ranges, and there ia also, we are informed, a probability of a considerable increase in the price of that uece&sarv commodity taking pi ce ?. W K are in forme I that a trial, upon a large scale, of the. iron piping manufactured by Messra. Kineaid and M'Queen, of Dunedin, is aoout to be made at Clark's Diggings, in the place of the ordinary wooden tluming. : We sincerely trust that the experiment will prove ,-a success, and fully meet the expectation of the party by whom it ia about to be made. A special meeting of the School Committee ■was held in the schoolroom on Friday evening last. Pres.-nt: Messrs. W. liider '('chair), Horswell, Ross (sec.), Wilson, Bre rimer, and Dixon. Tlie object of the meeting was the selection, from a list of seven candidates, a •choolmistress for the Mount ida District School. The application of Mrs. A. Clark was accepted. It ia anticipated that, that lady will be enabled to commence her duties in about one month from the present date. We sincerely congratulate parents of families on the ■supply of a long felt want. OlJtt Kyebum correspondent, writes:—Between the evening of Saturday, the 14th iust. and the following Monday morning, one of those dastardly acts was perpetrated /at the Kyebum whieii in a civilised commjunitv are unaccountable, It. appears that some person or persons entered the upper tunnel of Messrs. .Brown and Co.'s coal pit., and with malice prepense. deliberately knocked down a couple of sets of timber, causing the tunnel to cave in. Messrs. Brown and Co were employed the greater part of Monday ia repairing damages, and the pit is again in working order. Messrs. Brown and Co. are now, we understand, prepared for any future visitors of this description, who will be very likely to find their underground pranks toru.iaate unpleasantly to themselves.

A special meeting of the Naseby Volunteer Fire Brigade took place at Rodders' Otago Hotel on the evening of Monday last, for the purpose of conferring with the Mount Ida Gamut Club on the subject of a dramatic entertainment being given by them in aid of the funds of the Brigade, who are desirous of substituting a suitable leathern, tor their present totally n.adequate canvas, hose, and purchasing additional materials necessary for the efficient carrying out of their operations. The arrangements on behalf of the Brigade was left in the hands of the following members, who were constituted a Committee for that purpose: —Messrs Inder (Captain), Pipe (Secretary), G-race, Langmaak, and Kccles. The Treasurer of the Mount Ida Relief Fund begs to acknowledge, with thanks, the ,sum of £l6, being proceeds of entertainment given by the Mount Ida Q-arrick Club in aid of the Fund. Wk regret to be again called upon to record another accident from earthfall on Surface H ill, resulting in instantaneous death, the victim on this. occasion was Malaehi Ryan, aged 33, and a native of Tipperarv, Ireland. Ax addition to the business firms of this town has this week taken place in the advent of Messrs. Brown and Smith, who are about to open a general store in Leven st reet, in the building which was formerly the billiard-room of the Liverpool Arms Hotel, and of which Messrs. Brown aud Smith are the present proprietors The site is one of the best in Naseby, and as both gentlemen are old residents, and well and favorably known, they will, we doubt not,-receive a fair share of public support. VVe cordially wish them success. The Mount Ida Oarrick Club will make their second appearance before the public on Thursday evening next, the 26th instant, at the Masonic Hall. The entertainment is advertised to be in aid of the funds of the Naseby jpift) The object ia a worthy oue,

and we seriously "wish the Club an equal success to that which they undoubtedly achieved on the occasion of their performance in aid of the funds of the Relief Committee. At about three o'clock on the afternoon of Wednesday last, a funeral procession of more than 2 M> persons followed the remains of tlie deceased Malachi Ryan to the cemetery. All the houses of business in Naseby were closed during the afternoon, anil gloom pervaded the who e community at this very aid catastrophe, this being the fifth or sixth accident resulting in death that has oecurre.. on Surface Hill since the ground was opened in that locality.
