ALTERATION OF MAIL SERVICE.

The Mount Ida -Trade Association appear to have taken the matter of mail reform between Cromwell and Dunedin, via this place, fairly to hear u , and to have adopted measures most likely to ensure the success of the movement. Not only have they circulated a petition, which has been extensively signed, having reference to this subject (a copy of which appeared in a recent issue), but they have, through their honorary secretary, Mr. C. de Lautour, addressed a letter to his Honor James Macandrew, with the view of obtaining his powerful influence in support of the movemeat. That his Honor fully estimates the importance of the desired reform in the mail service is evident from the following letter addressed by that gentleman to Mr. C. de Lautour, in reply to th 3 letter of the Mount Ida Trade Association above referred to :

Wellington, 18th Sept., 1871. Sib, —In reply to your communication respecting the mail service between Naseby and Dunedin on the one hand, and Naseby and Cromwell on the other, 1 have to state that I fully concur in the view of the Mount Ida Trade Association on the subject, and will do uiy best to induce the-General Government to give effect to them. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient, J. Macandkew, Superintendent of Otago. C. J. de Lautour; Esq., Naseby.

So far so good, and we are, we think, justified in expressing a hope, if not an opinion, that in the mail contract for 1872 due provision will be found for Naseby's being made the first, and Cromwell the second night's stage from Dunedin. The deviation of the present road over the Houndburn Hill must not, however, in any way be lost of. Until this great and necessary improvement be effected the motto of all the up-country districts should be " Agitate ! agitate ! agitate !"
