The sale of Mr. Michael Brooke's stock of drapery goods, by Messrs. Inder and G-eorge, took place at the store of Mr. John M'Donald (whither they had been removed for the sake of convenience), on the evenings of Friday, Saturday, and Monday last. There was on each night a large attendance, and good prices were, we are informed, upon each occasion
I realised. We are glad to be able t j state that the contributions to the Hospital Fund in the outlying districts are reported as being very satisfactory, and also that the best wishes and hopes for the success of the movement are entertained throughout the districtT"" The following extract from a letter written by a Maerewhenua correspondent, would seem to show that the Ofcekaike Reef at Maerewhenua, which only a few months back seemed to promise so well, has resulted in an utter collapse, to the great injury, if not ruin, of many of the persons concerned : — We sunk the shaft eighty-five feet, and drove into the reef, but there was nothing in it to d i any good, so we have given it up altogether as a bad job." This furnishes another instance, if such were wanting, to demonstrate the glorious uncertainty of quartz mining. Lv connection with the proposed Hospital, we learn that, though sympathising with the movement, the St. Bathanites will not be able to afford it much support this year, their subscriptions having been already forwarded to Clyde, in aid of the funds of the Dunstan Hospital. A soiree will be held in the Masonic Hall on the evening of Wednesday next, at seven p.m., on the occasion of the ordination of the Rev. J. M'Cosh Sm th as the Presbyterian Minister for the Mount Ida district, lickets, 2s. 6d. each, can be obtained from any of the members of the Presbyterian Committee. The
Rev. Mr. M'Cosli Smith will take the chair, and it is expected that addresses will be de- ( Hverecl by the Kev. Messrs. Stuart, Christie, Clark, Will, Gillies, and Johnston. The Provincial Government Gazette of the 27th ult. notifies that Police Constable Strean has been - appointed Inspector 6fi Slaughter Houses for the Mount Ida District. We have reason to believe that it lias been at last, decided that Mr. E. H. Carew is to be definitely stationed at Blacks. A foot race for £5 a-side, distance one hundred yards, took place yesterday afternoon on the mail* road outside the cricket ground, between Arkenstall and Joseph Laverty, in which the latter was victorious by several yards.
Notwithstanding rain, snow, and an unusually dark night, this clever lady's entertainment was well attended at the Ma-
sonic liall on the evenings of Wednesday and and Thursday last. The amusing comedietta of Wild Oats and Household Sketches being the programme provided. If hearty laughter and continuous applause are criterions
of success, Edith Palmerston's second visit may be considered one the most successful amusements given in Naseby. We notice by advertisement there will be performances this and to-morrow evening, including Lady Audley's and we cordially recommend our
readers to avail themselves of the opportunity offered. We understand that Miss Palmerston
proposes to visit St. Bathans on Monday evening. Among- the varied amusements of the race
week we may mention the Kentucky Minstrels, ■who gave several successful entertainments at the Oddfellows' Hall. We were unable to be
present, but from the opinions expressed outside we cannot doubt that they deserved all the applause they received. Considering the numerous entertainments given on the same eveniuga the attendance at these performances must be regarded as highly satisfactory. The entertainment is well worthy of public patronage. We call attention to several auction sales by Messrs. Inder andG-eorge this day, to-morrow, and Monday. Full particulars will te found in our advertising columns. As will be seen by an advertisement in another column, the total receipts from the G-ar-rick Club entertainment was £2B Os. 6d., £l2 Os. 6d. of which has been devoted to the payment of unavoidable contingencies, the bnlmce, £l6, has been handed over to the Relief Fund Committee. Under the old system of two to one this sum would represent £4B in aid of the Fund, and even under the present one to ona system it will amount to £32. The usual monthly meeting of the Mount Ida District School Committee was held at the school house on the erening of Monday, 2nd
October. Present: Messrs. Wilson (chair), Grumitt, Hay, Hoiswell, Dixon, Bremner, and Ross. The minutes of the previous meetings were read and confirmed. Letters from the Provincial Secretary and the Secretary of the Education Board, having reference to the vote for the removal and enlargement of the school building, were read and received. The quarterly and monthly reports of the schoolmaster were read. The average number of children in attendance during the quarter was 78; during the month of September, 63—girls, 26; buys, 37. Proposed by Mr. Hay, seconded by Mr. Bremner, that the Schoolmaster's report be adopted and acknowledged—the Secretary to inform the master that the three day's holiday had better be given this week.—Seven applications were received for the office of schoolmistress. It was proposed and carried that the selection be deferred till the special meeting to be held on the evening of Monday next, at eight o'clock, for that purpose. The meeting then adjourned.
