DEEP LEADS

We cannot but regret that all our efforts to attract public attention to tbe importance of the question of deep leads has hitherto failed to produce a single expression of opinion upon the subject from any miner or resident in this district. Our opinions on this matter were, however, fully endorsed by the * Cromwell Argua,' in an article which appeared in that journal on the 13th instant, and bears a striking resemblance to an article of our own in a recent issue. We do not desire to charge our contemporary with plagiary ism, but we must confess that the similarity of opinions and expressions upon the subject are somewhat peculiar. We have no doubt, however, in spite of her wealth in reefs, Cromwell would be only too pleased to discover within herself deep leads in alluvial ground. We have so often drawn attention to this subject—so often pointed out how, in our opinion, the matter could he tested and the question of deep leads determined at a very moderate cost one way or the other, that we feel ourselves justified in accusing the people of the district of indifference in a matter in which, perhaps, their greatest and most permanent interests may be concerned and involved. In our opinion the matter, once started, would speedily assume a tangible form, and we should then discover whether there existed, beyond what we at present know, a source of auriferous wealth in the district, the extent of which it is impossible either to foretell or estimate.
