THE Mount Ida Chronicle FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1871.
A ppulic mketixj will li»ke place at Hun ler's Empire Hotel this evening, to consider the correspondence which has taken olace between the Provisional Committee and the Go vernment, with reference to the establishment of an hospital at Naseby for the Mour.t Ida district. V^-" S. VVe are requested to call attention to the isfte, by Inder and George, of the Awamoko mining property, situate at the Maerewhenua. t'his property in the Maerewhenua district stands, we believe, at the present time in so favorable a position as to offer inducements to any person incliued to invest capital in mining enterprises. Thk half-yearly meeting of the Naseby Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in Cogan's Melbourne Hotel, on the evening of Monday last. The following members were present: Captain Inder (chair), Lieutenant Bremner, Sergeant •Stephens, Foreman M'Gregor, Costello (sec), Morrison, Rolgers, Touted, Eceles, Collett, Laugmaak, Pipe, Wilkie, Kirby, Cogan, and Wilson. The minutes of laat month's meeting and practice nights having been real and adopted, and the Treasurer's statement received, the following officers were electe 1 for the ensuing six mouths: W. Inder was reelected Capiat); Q-. Stephens, lieutenant; VV. J. Millar, Sergeant ; J. M'Gregor, Fore man ; D. Pipe, Secretary and Treasurer. A Committee of seven was appointed, consisting <>f the officers ami Messrs. Kirby and Morrison A subscription list was opened for the purpose of enabling the Brigade to purchase a suitable leather hose. The result of this subscription we have yet to learn, but we feel th it it should and will be such as the Fire Brigade desire. Canvas, as a hose, is of tOi> perishable a material to stand the test of even ordinary practice, and what the result might be when the safety of the town was dependent upon its strength and availability has not yet, we are thankful to say, been tested. A proper leather fire brigade hose is the ho>e which has stood I lie test of ages, and one which will bear the wear a:.d tear o r ten or a dozen of its at present, eanvas sub«t.LiiU\ On the ground, therefore, of economy —of availability or of durabili'y —there is. we imagine, the leathern hose is ti;e article required, and we will not allow ourse.ves to believe that the people of N iseby will prove so untrue to themselves and their intens's as to refuse their mile for tiie purchase of the proper and most durable malerid. l.v the Resident Magistrate's Court on Saturday, before H.
