We learn from the ' Arrow Observer ' that a numerously signed petition has been forwarded to C. E. ilaughton, Esq., from the residents there, urging upon the Council the necessity of removing the head-quarters of the Warden of the Wakatip District from Queenstown to Arrowtown ; or, in lieu thereof, to appoint a sub-Warden. Mil. H. W. Robinson lias been appointed Registration and Returning Officer for the Electoral District of Mount Ida for the election of members of the House of Representatives, in the room of Mr. Vincent Fyke. Thb following is the list of letters lying unclaimed at the Post Office, Naseby, on l«t August, 1871 : —Tim Brown, Andrew Conncll, Thos Flavin, Messrs K Houghton & Co, Hy Hodson, Harry Jones, Daniel Kane, John A Mowbray, William Mervyn, Patrick M'Gunigal, Alexander M Farlane (3), John Maedonald, John O'ilalloran, G Purkin, Henry Saville. A L.A.TK telegram from Auckland, under date July 26th, says :—Two tons of specimens were taken out of the Caledonian mine yesterday and to-day, ami shares are now selling at £195. Tookey's are at £36, and Otago at £4. I ho share market was active yesterday, but is dull to-day. The Rev. Mr. M'Cosh Smith will preach at the Kyeburn on Sunday next at the usual hour, and in the Masonic Hall, Naseby, same evening at 6.30 p.m. Kino Winter has at last taken up his abod* among us, and as U usual in nucb OMei, mining

and other operations have been in a great measure suspended. For the last week snow has been the order of the day, and though the falls have not been particularly heavy, they have been accompanied by such hard frosts at night as to have caused the water supply to be intermittent and irregular. The results, therefore, are easily to be arrived at —viz., a decreased escort and a great depression in all the usual business transactions of this town and district. Still, while we regret the inconveniences to which we have alluded, we gladly welcome the fall of snow, from which we anticipate the best prospective results to the district. No one should be sufficiently selfish and foolish to think only of the present, more particularly when the general interest is concerned. Better, far better, that the district should sustain a temporary seasonable depression with prospective favorable results than that it should receire all its benefits at once. What this district require, and has always required, is a heavy fall of snow to supply the demands of early summer.—this want has been the burden of many of the oldest Hogburn miners' aong —without which this district must necessarily retrograde. While, therefore, we admit a present annoyance and nuisance, both to persons and business, we gladly welcome that which we feel must prove ultimately to be an immense benefit and advantage to the district. The usual monthly meeting of the Mount Ida School Committee will take place in the school room, on Monday evening next, at 7.30 p.m. Again has this district, since our last issue, borne additional evidence (if such were necessary) of the unsoundness and the treacherous nature of the ground upon which cur miners are compelled to work, and that incessantly, to gain, perhaps, a precarious and, at the best, oftimes a not very pleasant or remunerative livelihood. We have had, from time to time since our advent here —alas, too frequently—been called upon to chronicle accidents from common terror, earth fall—sometimes resulting iu-£L'ath r at Gtheß iuiivelong crippling, and at others in at least a season of temporary and painful inconvenience. On this occasion we have to report that, since our last issue, only seven dayspust, three additional accidents have occurred from the same old cause—--earthfall. In these cases, Messrs. Robert Brown and William Jones, old miners in the district have been very severely though, we trust, not dangeroualj' contused ; while, in the third case, that of cSimon Naylou, a severe fracture of both shoulder blades has occurred. From enquiries made we gather that in each case the patient, is progressing satisfactorily. The escort return shows, as might have been expected, an unusual decrease in the number of ounces—the last down escort taking only the modest, amount of 7020z5. from Mount Ida. When the other up-country returns are to hand we doubt not, (excepting in milder localities) that we shall still be found to hold <our own. There is no fighting against Nature, whether she comes in the shape of drought,, flood, or frost. Wjj regret that our usual Kveburn letter has, for some reason or other, failed to reach us. We have reason to know that the letter was written and forwarded in due course. In fact, an admission of the loss has been made to ms by the bearer. Up to the hour of going to press our usual telegram had not arrived. Want of interesting or exciting news might, .-perhaps, explain the omission. Wb call attention to the sale by Messrs. Inder and George, by public auction, at the Victoria Hall, at half-past six p.m., of onethird share in the Undaunted Water Race Company. After which a number of miscellaneous articles will be disposed of. See advertisement.
