AUDI ALTERAM PARTEM.
(To the Editor of the Mount Ida Cheontcle .) Sir, —Will you give ine space in your valuable paper to rectify a few mistakes made in a letter signed, "Digger." I should not have taken the trouble, only the statements made in such a cowardly manner reflects on our Warden, and in such a way that it is impossible for him to reply. The facts of the case are as follows :—Having built a coal house at the back of my residence on ground not within the boundary of the residence area I occupy, which area dates from Ist May, 1866, I applied for the piece of ground about 100 feet long by three feet at one end and fifty at the" other, the same having been proved worthless for mining purposes by my sinking for water ; and I can safely say no payable gold was found, it being what is termed a mullock bank. I went through the usual form, and called for the certificate, when the Warden stated there was no objection but would like to see the ground before granting it, for fear that it might interfere with mining. We went on to the ground. I called on Mr. Ronald Macrae, who was working jiear, and asked him if it was likely that it would interfere with miniii". His answer was that there might be gold in some of the ground, but it could not be worked unless a sludge channel were cut. On this I received the grant. But if " Digger "is sincere in his remarks as to the value of the ground, he has my permission to work it without any compensation, and if it will " pay thirty bob per day," as he says it will, give him a hand to \n ork it.—l am, &c, John Bremner.
