(From our own Correspondent.)

Duiiedin, Thursday 4 p.in

The tedious case of Reieheldt, for arson, terminated on Monday last in his having been committed to take his trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. He was, however, admitted to bail.

The last week has been one of disgraceful wrangling in the Provincial Council—the bone of contention being the amount of honorarium to be paid each Honorable Member for his valuable services to the State. The contest ended in the sum of 20s. per day for country, and 10s. for town, members. To-day the Provincial Council was prorogued by his Honor the Superintendent. Honorable Members sent back to their, in many cases, disappointed and disgusted constituencies, £heir amiable spouses, and their loving families. A general and strong impression prevails that their quittance will be a good riddance. The polling for the office of Mayor of Dunedin, will take place to-morrow. The candidates in the field are the two ex-Mayors Messrs. Birch and Fish and Mr. Thoneman.
