Thb Rev. Mr M'Cosh Smith will preach at the Masonic Hull on Sunday next forenoon and evening at the usual hours ; and at the Kyeburn diggings on Sunday, 23rd inst., at the usual hour.

We believe some little inconvenience has been felt since the removal «.f the Registrar of births and marriages to another station j but we are in a position to state that the appointment will shortly be held by a gentleman residing in the district. The present Registrar will be at Nasebv on Monday next, and will attend to any business required of him. The long continued frost has rendered tra* veiling over the mountains exceedingly uange» rous and almost, impossible. We learn from Mr. Warden Robinson and Mr. Barron, who wentover last week to the Maerewhenuathrough the Pass, that they had the utmost dilHculity in getting over the frozen ground or the steep sidings, and several times nearly lost their horses. They were obliged to return to Naseby by way of Oamaru. We understand that there wa a very little snow on the mountains but that the worst and most dangerous travelling was where there was none—the ground being glazed over with a coating of ice which rendered it almost impossible for horses to get any footing. Thk half yearly election of officers for the Naseby Catholic Young Mens Society took place in the Catholic Church on Friday last—--13 rot her Joseph Kealy in the chair. The Secretary stated that the financial condition of the society was very satisfactory. The LYeasun r's balance sheet was read and accepted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing half year : —President, Bro. John M'Nainara ; Vice President, Bro. Joseph Kealy ; Secretary, Bro. P. M. Morony ; Treasurer, Viro. Michael Lanirum ; Librarian, Bro. James Downey ; Warden, Bro. Patrick Bleach ; and a Council of seven. The meeting afterwards terminated with a vote of thanks to the retiring olllcers. The Warden's Court was occupied till a late hour in hearing the cases Kosevear v. M'Donald and others, and John Morrison v. E. T. George and others. In consequence of the amount of space occupied by late telegrams the reports of these cases will appear in our next issue.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court jesterday, there were several complaints by the police against the uncleanly state of the premises at the back of Messrs. Costello, Pescio, Keenan, and Grace, which however were, with the consent jf the Bench, withdrawn, upon promises being given that the nuisances should be immediately abated.—.-shaw r. Jones: Claim for £2 ss. sd. for goods supplied. No appearance of defendant. Judgment for amount claimed, with costs.

The general monthly meeting of the Naseby Volunteer Fire Brigade took place at M'jN'arnara's Kiucora Hotel, when a balance-sheet was submitted by the auditors, showing the present financial position of the Brigade. Balance-sheet received and adopted. The Captain (W. Inder) handed over to the Treasurer the sura of £2 155., collected by Messrs. Brookes and Horswell as quarterly contributions, commencing from July 1, 1871. Mr. John Eccles handed over the sum of £l, being a, donation to the Fire Brigade from Mr. Faj> quhar, leather merchant, Dunedin.—Votes of thanks to Messrs. Brookes and Horswell for their exertions, as also to the auditors, Messrs. Wilson and M'Nanmra, and also to Lieutenant Bremner and Mr. John Eccles, were unanimously adopted.

Mic \V. .J. Mrr.LA.it presented to the Naseby Volunteer Fire Brigade the sum of £l, on account of Meßsrs. Burke, brewers, Dunedin. We lire glad to find that with ourselves, as with otiier communities, real merit, uprightness, and lu norm gentlemen holding oilicial positions, whether in Government or other offices, ar« not likely to be forgotten or jjo uu-

rewarded. We some time since announced the probable elevation of Mr. E. 11. Carew (so long and favorably known in this district) to the office of Warden at Biacks. We have since

heard with pleasure that our report has re- ' ccived confirmation by the recent acceptance by that gentleman of the appointment referred to. We understand also that the people of JSaseby are not disposed to allow Mr. Carew to depart fro.** their midst without some valuable and tangible mark of their respect and esteem.

The visual Warden's Court was held at the Maerevvhenua on the 4th inst. Mr. Warden itobinson was accompanied from Naseby by Mr. JBarron the surveyor, who hail been instructed to accompany him f..>r the purpose of assisting him to enquire as to whether ar.y land was there available and req ired for agri- . cultural leases. The result oltliat enquiry ap pears to have been that the Warden was satistied that there was no present demand for land for agriculture. An account of the enquiry will be found in our report of the proceedings of the Court. The town of Naseby has for the last two years evinced a decided disposition to extend its limits, and extend those limits down what has hitherto been known —in tue days of primitive simplicity —as the Main or Hogburn U-ully. This part of the town at the present time possesses, beyond a doubt, the neatest and best cottages, and would seem to arrogate to itself all the importance of the fashionable end of the town, if we may lay any dependence upon the name which a lately-erected and newlycommencing butchery establishment has selected—'- The West Eud Butchery." We will uot stop to enquire whether the points of the compass have had anything to do with the selection of this higli-H »wn name, but we may, we think, in no spirit of cavil or disparagement

ask —What next? f_ GtJB St. Bathans correspondent, does not i Bet'm to have been aware that two petitions were forwarded to that place in support of the establishment of an Hospital at Naseb;.— one to Mr. Muivey, which has since been received and despatched to the proper quirter; the other to Mr. Pyle, which, we understand, was ■J forwarded by that gentleman to Welshman's adjacent places, and of which up to the

present time we have heard nothing further

Our St. Bathans friends will have seen that kthe sum of £250, for the ■erection of an Uospi- , tal at JVaseby, has been appropriated by the Provincial Council.v,^ We are sorry to "near that that old and favorite driver of Cobb's coaches, Edward Devine, met with an accident on the evening of Saturday last, near the Water of Leith Bridge As many reports are in circu'ation as to the circumstances under which the accident occurred, we may state that we have heard from a source upon which we can'most thoroughly rely, that upon the evening in question the coach, when near the Water of Leith Bridge, overtook a large number of drays loaded with wood, and going in the s-irae direction towards Duriedin, and occupying-the greater portion of the road. At the moment of passing, the tip- - board of one of the drays fell, causing the coach horses to bolt off the road, and thereby capsizing the coach into the ditch, fortunately .without any passenger sustaining further in juries than a few scratches and bruises of an unimportant character. We are further asBured that not the slightest, shadow of blame can with justice ,be ciiarged against Mr. Devine.
