THE FRENCH WARINDEMNITY.
A German correspondent, with a view of assisting by practical illustration to obtain an idea of the enormous amount of war indemnity (£200,000,000) which France is required to pay, forwards the following to the Me bourne 'Argus,' translated from the German Adelaide newspaper:—" Take 64 English sovereigns to be lib. weight, gives 1395 tons 15cwt. 2qr. 261b., and it would require 20 railway trains, each of 14 trucks (containing 5 tons of gold for every truck) to transport this mass of whicj again would fill a room of the follow iug dim.ensi.ms :~-18 ft. long, 16ft. wide, and 9 ft. liigh. To form a roll of sovereigns, reckoning 16 sovereigns to an inch, would require a length of 19G English miles and 1500 feet. A smart cashier, ordered t j count this sum of sovereigns,'working twelve hours on each week day, able to count 00 sovereigns per minute, would require fifteen years and eight weeks to accomplish his work."
